The Common Tongue

The Common Tongue is the language most commonly spoken throughout Iatar. It was developed throughout Titan's Rule as Mystan , a common language to be spoken amongst the Secret Order during their conspiracy to overthrow the Titans. Therefore, it is the language the Gods now speak, and so is spoken all throughout Iatar into the present time. Though it has lost its original name, the myth of how it came to be is a story well told throughout Iatar.   Being developed during the formation of the Secret Order, it has origins in all of the Titanic tongues, save for Orcish, as it was too guttural for the other races to comprehend. Throughout its life as a language, it has remained fairly stable, due to the undying and present nature of the Gods throughout the Chaos Era. Since the departure of the Gods it has evolved, and many races have ceased using the Common Tongue as their primary language, though the ones who have deviated and yet still remain in contact with wider Iatar will often maintain their knowledge of the tongue, speaking it to outsiders when needed.   Throughout the Temporal Era, the common tongue has developed idiosyncrasies in different regions, gaining phrases and sayings from the other tongues spoken nearby. Accents vary from region to region, and depending on the idioms people use, a trained ear can usually determine the origin of the speaker.   The Common Tongue is the accepted language for international trade throughout Iatar. In fact, sailors participating in inter-continental trade have developed a pseudo-dialect of the common tongue which unifies the traits of the various continental dialects of the language. As a result, the trade dialect spoken today is the closest modern form of the language to its ancient origin.

Geographical Distribution

The Common Tongue is spoken all throughout Iatar, though more isolated people groups have deviated significantly from the language, and exclusive mortal races have reverted to their original tongues. Therefore, the common tongue is rarely spoken in Zhamaes, as the Dragons there have returned to a language resembling Titanic Draconic.
