TRUE STORY REFERENCE - Alois Pfaller

Alois grew up with a personal conviction that he must, at any cost, fight against injustice. And it came from an amazing and unexpected place - he's mother favored his sister.   Alois is an interesting character because he found himself overwhelmingly predispositioned to fight against injustice, but achieved nothing for his effort, except to save his own dignity and be admired by those who heard his story.   "The stories of Alois Pfaller and Vladimir Kantovski are particularly intriguing. They don't seem to be acting in their own best interests at all. Despite all kinds of pressure, despite moments when the 'sensible' course of action was to choose personal safety, these two stayed true to their beliefs. They are the rare stuff of which saints and revolutionaries are made. Although they were of different nationalities, I thought it was no accident that neither of them was an easy-going person. I got the impression that after the war they were just as likely to tell their boss they were not doing something because it was 'unjust', or deliberately to put themselves in danger by trying to prevent a stranger on the street being attacked by a group of yobs. Their kind of outlook is not something you can switch on and off."   See the screen shots of "Their Darkest Hour: People Tested to the Extreme in WWII" by Laurence Rees.
