Chapter 29 TRANSFORMATION OF A HUMAN HEART

Transformation of a human’s heart is only possible through two external inputs: discipline, which we have covered already, and the Holy Spirit. Discipline becomes less effective as humans grow old. Even for a young heart, discipline cannot bring complete renewal, but for an old and hardened heart it is almost impossible.
The only option for transformation, then, is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the means by which a heart can be transformed, but he will only operate in so far as he is given permission. On one end of the spectrum, and even for humans who are only partially submitted, he will enable transformation by providing the willpower and intentionality that the corrupted heart fails to deliver. The Holy Spirit provides a person the power they require to transform their own unwilling heart. By this means, the Holy Spirit provides humans the opportunity to turn their heart toward God, something their heart is incapable of doing on its own.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. … Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. GALATIANS 5:16-18 & 25 NLT

On the other end of the spectrum, for a fully yielded person, the Holy Spirit will bring to bear something that resembles a full heart transplant. At the point that a new spirit is birthed within them, the flame destroys the old heart by fire. Amidst the ashes of the old, a brand new heart is kindled.

I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. EZEKIEL 11:19-20 NKJV
