Ivan Volkov

Ivan Volkov is the last surviving member of the Volkov family after a suspicious fire in his mother’s workshop killed everyone else.

Personal history

Ivan had a normal childhood (or as normal as it can be when your family is the most traditional arcane alchemists around), until his family was killed in a house fire while he was in school. Ivan was 16 years old. He moved in with his best friend from school afterwards, but had nightmares about coming back home only to find it burned to the ground with his family still inside almost every night. Ivan decided he would never touch alchemy again.
At the age of 18, Ivan moved out of his friend's home because he was old enough to get on the government's housing plan and he did not want to impose on his friend's family any longer. He tried to find a job, but nothing worked out for him. Ivan realised the only thing he knew how to do well was alchemy. He could not turn away from it. Ivan became an alchemist.
At the age of 22, Ivan got enough money to rent the top house in a two-house development. The interior decoration wasn’t necessarily to his taste, but it was a good flat for a reasonable price, and the owner didn’t mind him having his alchemy station there. Ivan was even allowed to pay part of the rent with alchemy.
The house in the ground floor belonged to Wilhelm Naschtergale, a young pianist. The two neighbours got on well, and eventually started dating. Only then Wilhelm revealed he was the "Virility Test" child of Rohesia Rottborne. As such, he had access to a lot of money (that he usually chose to pretend was not there because he liked to be able to live on his own). Wilhelm proposed to buy Ivan's house and turn their houses into one, where they would live together and raise a family.
Ivan accepted the proposal. He was keen to have his own family again, preferably a large one (because his own family had been big, and he never got used to being on his own). The couple made their relationship official in all the possible legal ways (though Wilhelm vetoed anything related to noble traditions "for Ivan's own sanity") and they took a year to build the house in the way they wanted.
Ivan gave birth to five children. He vowed to never teach them alchemy because he did not want his personal tragedy to repeat itself. This was set to be the end of the Volkov Arcane Alchemy tradition. But then, his oldest child, Natasha, entered a relationship with a descendant of another famous arcane alchemy family, the Aibas. Because of that relationship, Ivan ended up having to look at his past in a way he never intended to. And only then he realised how suspicious the death of his family had been...

Ivan works as an arcane alchemist, because that is the only thing he knows how to do.
