No. 1 Silver Place

No. 1 Silver Place

Every time I visit, I have the unmistakable impression that the place was a haberdashery that had somehow been dismantled and removed only moments before my arrival.

There are several portals to Fairweather in the London area. Most Service personnel use the one located in the Aldersgate Street station. Housekeeping has a couple that are large enough for carts and there is rumored to be one in the basement of Westminster. But of all of the London portals, the one that most people know Fairweather by is No. 1 Silver Place.

Details

Silver Place in London is a short and narrow alley lined on both sides with four-story buildings. On the ground floor are a pair of watchmakers and a maker of binoculars and opera glasses. There is a tea shop on one corner. There are also offices housing chartered accountants and a solicitor. Located on the south side of the street, in roughly the middle of the block, is No. 1. This has a black wooden door and a black-framed window that is barred on the outside. The transom above the door is barred as well. The three floors above each have a pair of windows for apartments accessible through the black wooden door immediately to the right which has a brass 1B on it.   Inside, No.1 Silver Place is a single room, nineteen feet wide, ten feet high, and thirty-one feet deep. There is a well-worn Persian rug on the floor, wood paneling on the walls, and a small desk near the back. Two gas lights hanging from the ceiling illuminate the room. If it is daylight outside, light will filter in through the shuttered window and transom.   No matter when a visitor arrives, the sole occupant of the room is Oswald. He will closely inspect any documentation that he is provided. If he's convinced of the genuine nature of the invitation and the bona fides of the presenters, he will direct them to a door in the side wall. No one will remember seeing the door before it was pointed out.   Passing through the door will lead to a corridor that appears extremely long, although when the door to No. 1 Silver Place closes, a pair of doors become clear, just a few steps away. These open into the main foyer at Fairweather.
