Synchronize Spell in Expedition Demeter | World Anvil

Synchronize

1... 2... 3... 4

Synchronization is a form of Attunement that bards use to bring forth the mental state required to achieve arcane effects. Synchronize is an adaptation of Arcana Meditari but is different in some ways when compared to standard meditative practices. Synchronization is considered far easier and can be done in just about any heat environment without formal training. The training that is involved centers around the process of synchronizing oneself with the environment around them, which requires in-depth knowledge of Bardic Lore.

Matching Patterns

One can achieve the goal of Attunement in many ways using synchronization. The methods used often depend on the preferred medium of the bard. The goal is to match up in mind, body, and spirit to one's environment. This is what allows the complexity of Bardic Lore to work. A painter may need to focus their attention on their subject in order to a attune, staring intently with her eyes tracing every intricate line and curve, every shadow, every change of color. A dancer may use the process of stretching as a method of Attunement, mentally going through the entire choreography of their routine. A musician takes audio cues in the world around them, tapping on his instrument or maybe their outer thigh. They may speak aloud as the beats assigned to each measure. A writer begins describing her surroundings in prose, refusing to skip even the most minor details as the world seems to show off to her in hopes of being memorialized in her words.

Regardless, the result will always be the same. As the synchronization reaches completion, the world will fall in line, meeting the the bard in the middle. Events around them begin following their lead as the bard synchronizes with the patterns of the world.
The choreography is almost predictive. Every motion seems to take the environment into account as the world becomes a stage for the bards performance. The world will seemingly holds its position as the artist paints her magnum opus. Events around the musician will occur on every beat, as if the universe itself chose the composition as its soundtrack. The bard begins noting the emotions her environment brings forth, she begins riding things that were not supposed to happen... but then they do.

Fun fact: Origins

The origins of synchronization come from Gregori Darset, The First Poet Laureate of Estoya. He came to the realization that the first ever bardic performance, one of his own composition, may have been caused by the mental state he was in at the time. She began working to find ways of bringing forth this mindset which led to the official creation of the spell as a whole.

Fun Fact: cartographers

In Lartasia, bards come in many forms. Nothing gives you more prestige as a bard them being a part of The Cartographers. This group makes a special breed of map. A proper cartographers map changes and adapts over time based on the experiences of the one who carries it in their travels. The lines of the land become more accurate as you explore, landmarks and distinct features are noted and marked with precision. One of the key factors in Expedition Demeter's success was Sia, a cartographer and exile of Lartasia who mapped the world on their long journey.

In Sync

The bard is incapable of breaking their attunement until the composition is done. It acts almost like a trance for them. They are aware of their environment, and can act in many ways as a response to it, but they cannot do anything that would prevent them from continuing their composition. Bards often find themselves stuck in their composition long after it was needed, never tiring in their ceaseless creation. Bards in war can suddenly realize the passing of the hours at the end of the composition. The feeling is often compared to waking up. Their inability to keep track of time fades and they suddenly find themselves alone in a field in the middle of the night surrounded by the fallen soldiers of a battle. The army rarely stays, and they spend the rest of the night trying to catch up.
