Royal and house standards

The ruling house of Estoya often enjoys many luxuries. One, in particular, is that they produce the best goods in their lands. This is because the ruling house often employs the best craftsmen and artists to work their lands. Those who are deemed the best establish the royal standard.   The royal standard is a title given to those entrusted with the honor of determining what standard all others in their trade must adhere to. The goal of the royal standard is to establish the bare minimum quality that one must meet to produce and sell their goods. A blacksmith, for example, must use particular tools, craft to a certain temperature and use specific processes in producing their goods. Nothing stops one from going above and beyond the standard but it keeps sub-par goods out of the market and ensures that quality is kept. This is where the house standards come in. Each house has their own standards who establish higher standards than that of the royal standard in districts and territories they control in an effort to increase competition in the market. One given this title is offered land to work on, usually on the land of the house they answer too. They join up with other standards to determine the requirements of their trade.
One must routinely display substantial quality and skill in their trade to be a standard. Often times the other standards of the trade will decide to induct someone based on how much merit they have, or how difficult it is to determine requirements, laws, and qualifications of their trade.
