The Laws of Etrea

Magic

Magic exists in Etrea. It is treated differently depending on culture. Some believe that magic is elemental, and so slots the different things magic can do into what they consider the core elements. Others categorise it differently - by divinity, by utility, etc - but it is all the same magic.   Magic relies on the life force and energy of the being using it to work. Some practioners can use the life force of others to charge their spells.  

Sapient Species

There are four broad categories of sapient species on Etrea - humans, shapeshifters, dragons, and merfolk. They can all trace their origins back to a singular ancestral species. At some point in Etrea's history, these species diverged, and then diverged some more.

Cosmology

Etrea is the fourth planet from the sun in a ten planet solar system known as the Celestial Spiral. It came into being from dust and space debris being pulled together by gravity to form a planet.

Principal Geography & Features

Etrea is bio-diverse. It has arid deserts, windswept tundras, ancient forests, towering mountains, abyssal oceans - and more.   It has a rather Earth-like climate, with two icy poles, and a much warmer equator. It also echoes Earth in the rotation of its seasons.   Etrea's moon has two rings and orbits the planet. The gravity of the moon influences the tides of the planet's oceans.

Initial Active Setting

Whilst Etrea is planetary in scope, I am currently focusing on one of its continents, Caia. In particular, I am focusing on the country of Serukis, as the first book of my fantasy trilogy is set there.
