The Kanai are Etrea's only migratory merfolk, travelling the thousands of miles between the planet's two poles twice a year. They chase the summer months and the reliable blooms of polar phytoplankton, which brings sealife from miles around to feed. They travel with a caravan made up of the domesticated steene whales.

The Kanai are made up of about two and a half thousand members, and are relatively small for polar merfolk - about thirty feet in length. At the poles, they separate into different groups, but come back together every six and a half months for the Rite of Clear Seas and the migration.
