Temple of the Fish Mother

The oldest building in Athevinel

The temple of the Fish Mother lies in the oldest district of Athevinel, a squat square building on the banks of the Gambeli's estuary. It is officially the oldest building the city, having been constructed of red sandstone over four thousand years ago. The Fish Mother is an ancient deity, prayed to before fishing for a good catch. This particular temple is her only one.   The temple is relatively small, able to fit no more than ten people inside at a time. It has no windows and an open arch for a doorway. The back wall is covered in pebbles from the riverbed and oyster shells from the beach. Driftwood stands stacked in the corners, whilst fishing nets and glass floats hang from the ceiling, making the small space seem even more cramped. Candles are placed in small hollows in the wall, their light casting flickering shadows across the space. The temple is maintained by a single priest.
