Earth-666
In this iteration of reality, history played out in much the same way as it did in The Real World—with one exception. Steam-powered technology dominated the landscape. The successful voyage of the RMS Titanic in the Earth-666 iteration cemented the belief that there was nothing steam power could not accomplish, and thus: steampunk!
Of course, despite the well-laid Plan of the goddess Mira, pesky human beings just couldn’t leave well-enough alone. In the year 1912 CE, a disgruntled time traveler intercepted the warnings which were supposed to save the Titanic from its traditional icy fate.
As punishment for the slight, Mira unleashed a Calamity upon the unsuspecting world.
