You cannot find the description of the process in any magical manuals, from reprints of historic grimoirs those sections are either torn out or entirely ommited by the publisher. If you dig deep and have access to the right kind of archives, it is possible to find out how it is done. And probably even replicate it. There are still instances when criminals, thieves and grifters are caught with a silver paw of a stray dog or a cat or a bird, so the knowledge is not completely lost. Although many syndicate families tend to inherit their paws as a status symbol from previous family members, as death is fairly common in that line of "work".
