Thurknot Myth in Dromaria | World Anvil

Thurknot

"Would you rather be bait or dead? That titan don't care 'bout your tears or pleas, only your flesh. So we bait it. We trap it. Or we all die. Ain't no room for soft hearts in this."
~ Thurknot
The Plans of Savagery, "Civil Gospels"

Description

In the harshest corners of Dromaria, grit and determination are the lifeblood of survival. From goblins scratching out a meager existence in the unforgiving badlands, to humans driven by unyielding self-preservation, there are always those who are willing to traverse the thorny path to stay alive. These people find guidance in Thurknot, through her relentless efforts to preserve mortal life.   Born during the Age of Horror, Thurknot was the first of the newly formed goblin race, a creation of the Otherwyld goddess, Dipthi. Thurknot's tenacity quickly elevated her as a leader, teaching her fellow goblins the tools needed to thrive amidst the relentless cold and darkness. Known for her cunning strategies and iron will, Thurknot joined the hero Lothor as part of his legendary Crusaders of Illumination in an attempt to save civilization.   Her greatest legacy is that of the Plans of Savagery . At the height of the Age of Horror, when things were at their worst, Thurknot crafted a series of plans to kill or capture the monsters assailing them, but at great cost. The Illumination faiths recall her Plans in great detail, highlighting both the necessity and brutality. To this day Summertide only refers to Thurknot as "Filth."   Believers in Thurknot comprehend the necessity of harsh choices for survival's sake, recognizing the power, skill, and cunning needed to execute them. They seldom concern themselves with the judgment of others, appreciating the strategic use of a well-placed dagger or a subtly poisoned drink, and the fortitude it takes to make such decisions.

Modern Depiction

Thurknot is traditionally shown as a knight cloaked in blood and grime, with exaggerated goblin ears trailing alongside her greasy hair. Always armed and prepared, she is typically portrayed amidst some shocking act. A recent controversial painting has Thurknot impaling a newborn Lucca Krazier, an artist's rebellious protest against the Demon War.

Tenets of Thurknot

The Diktat of Best Existence, a set of musings on a slate of rock carved by Thurknot herself, is considered gospel by many goblins. Currently on display in Port Duck and in the scriptures of Summertide, it offers a unique glimpse into the guiding principles of this goddess. In it, Thurknot establishes a hierarchy of needs.

Strike first, then vengeance, then you survive and get food. That’s the best way to stay alive.

Thurknot Worshiping Adventurers

Thurknot's exploits are forever embedded in goblin memory due to their connection to the goddess Dipthi, which grants them access to the memories of goblins long past. Adventurers who choose to follow Thurknot are often guided by an indomitable will and a relentless desire to survive. These individuals understand that life is a harsh and challenging battlefield, and they are prepared to face it head-on. For them, Thurknot is not just a deity; she is a symbol of personal determination.   Adventurers often take up the roles of frontline combatants and protectors, embodying Thurknot's tenacity on their journey. Their choice to follow Thurknot is a bold declaration of their will to survive, their readiness for vengeance, and their refusal to be oppressed.
Goddess of Goblins, Vengeance, & Survival

Why would you choose this faith?
Thurknot calls to those who live on the edge of existence, where every day is a struggle. She is an example for individuals who understand that life often demands a willingness to make difficult, morally ambiguous decisions. Thurknot's teachings resonate with goblins who live amidst the raw harshness of life, but her tenets also hold appeal for anyone who values self-preservation and are prepared to do whatever is necessary at all times.   This faith is particularly appealing to adventurers who are relentless in the pursuit of their goals, undeterred by the dangers that might lie in their path. Barbarians, fighters, and rogues often find a kindred spirit in Thurknot. Her teachings encourage the preemptive strike, a doctrine that suits an upfront, confrontational style.
Backgrounds
People of any background may find themselves drawn to Thurknot, but goblins are always the most likely.
Holy Symbol
Two symbols represent Thurknot: an unclean wishbone often worn as a talisman by goblins, and a spear shattering a shield, known as the Shieldbreaker. The latter is typically used by non-goblin worshipers and is featured in texts discussing strategies for survival. Followers of Thurknot proudly display the Shieldbreaker as a sign of their unceasing will to survive and as a warning to any who might harm them.
Associated Religions
Most faiths hold less favorable views of Thurknot, with many considering her methods excessively dangerous and radical. Lothoren remembers her as a warrior who lost her way, while the Summertide paints her as a murderer.
