Graetis

Graetis is a small territory in western Pathriam, specializing in education for the greater Dromarian community. It has limited military and economic resources and largely relies on tuition and external aid, particularly from Thorn, to sustain itself. The territory's diverse and ever-changing population is united by a thirst for knowledge. The renowned Library of Asundeai also resides here, attracting significant attention and tourism.

Geography

Graetis is a picturesque territory, characterized by its rolling green fields, forests, and a rocky coastline along the Scorched Sea. Recently, Thorn has utilized some of Graetis's open lands for livestock farming, attracting various predators from the surrounding woods.

History

Founded in 4,190 DA by the legendary Chosen, Angus Noel, Graetis began as the site for the Library of Asundeai and the College of Chords, envisioned as a sanctuary of knowledge in Pathriam. As time passed Angus was granted governance over the area as a reward for his monumental efforts in establishing the institutions. He named the territory Graetis in honor of his mentor. Leadership of Graetis eventually transferred to the Proctor of the College of Chords, a position currently held by Hargar Brunestone.

Culture

Graetis's educational institutions welcome individuals from all corners of Dromaria, resulting in a diverse blend of cultures and traditions. However, the community is unified by a common respect for education and knowledge. This respect is not merely encouraged but enforced, with the threat of expulsion for those who do not comply. The permanent residents, primarily inhabiting the two main towns, often work in roles that support the educational community or entertainment. These townsfolk adapt to the seasonal ebb and flow of students, providing essential services and fostering an ever-changing local culture.   Those visiting find an abundance of inns and performances going on around every street corner. While there are curfews within the downtown region of Buret, the farther you get from the colleges the more rowdy it becomes.

Relationships

Graetis maintains open borders for those who come in peace with a willingness to learn. However, the territory lacks robust trade, goods, or agricultural production. As an essential part of the Westlands educational infrastructure, Graetis receives support from neighboring territories, most notably Thorn, which has extended significant aid. While Thorn has not yet pressed for repayment, the growing debt is a concern.

Economy

Graetis's primary source of income is tuition fees. Proctor Hargar's refusal to raise these has put the territory in financial peril, making it increasingly dependent on Thorn's aid. This assistance has given Thorn influence over Graetis's educational curriculum. Several school delegates are considering either alternative revenue streams or replacing Proctor Hargar with a leader willing to raise tuition.

Ruling Parties & Factions

Angus Noel. The legendary bard and author of some of the world's most famous songs. Angus is an elvenari Chosen of Dona. He has been alive for an unknown amount of time and is still seen around the College of Chords performing to a crowd.   Proctor Hargar Brunestone. A dwarf with over a century of leadership experience in Graetis, Hargar is deeply passionate about education. However, the demands of governance have increasingly diverted his attention away from academia.   Eliza Portenmyer. Eliza is a halfling who serves as Hargar's assistant. She has utilized her time in Graetis to become one of the territory's most knowledgeable individuals, particularly in lore and history.   Barek Summers. A human magus and an Anointed member of the Band of the Last Days, Barek currently serves as the headmaster of the Library of Asundeai. His hero status has led to an influx of library visitors, many of whom wish to meet him personally.

Current Events

Financial Dependence on Thorn. The territory's growing debt to Thorn has become a subject of urgent debate within Graetis. Proctor Hargar Brunestone's continued reliance on Thorn's financial aid has led to questions about the sustainability and independence of the territory's educational institutions.   Attack on the Library of Asundeai. A recent incident has escalated tensions within Graetis. Lyric, a Primal Dragon, was seriously injured in an attack by cultists of Rodgort seeking to destroy the Library of Asundeai. As a result, the library has been temporarily closed to the public and is only accessible to enrolled students until Lyric recovers.   Monsters in the Forest. The Dragon's Nest, a forest on the western border of Graetis has seen an influx of predators hunting local livestock. More militant presence is beginning to arrive from Thorn to protect their farms, causing anger among the citizens of Graetis at the outside forces on their land.
