Drake's Dozen

Revolution is coming

Industrial, magical, political; the dual-moon planet of Neyush is on the precipice of change.

People of many different species, reeling from the effects of the Great War almost two centuries ago, are accelerating into a new age, fueled by innovative discoveries and forgotten secrets. The event that ended the war and decimated an entire people is referred to as The Blink.

No-one knows how or why it happened, though many have theories.

Little fish, big pond

The Blink also brought change to the Dozen.

Empty metaphysical Spheres of existence, or the homes of unknowable, ancient gods? Opportunities for life-enhancing magitech, or eldritch traps waiting to ensnare the curious? Aspects of reality as normal as time and gravity, or complex creations of the Drake herself?

Whatever the Dozen truly are, something is different now. Something changed with the Blink. Something is coming to Neyush.

Are the secrets behind the Dozen the key to saving it, or the catalyst for its doom?

Bloodeyes

Watch the Sky

Background

klia-stars

An important person needs an important retinue.

The Bloodeyes are almost as infamous as Captain Bloodscale herself; a squad of four kliasta, hand-picked and trained, dedicated to her protection--not that an undead revenant needs that much protecting, except for fotune-seekers eager to become known as the next Deathkeeper.

With great power...

Being chosen to join the Bloodeyes is a huge privilege, if you're into that sort of thing, and an even huger responsibility. Bloodscale's enemies face either death, or torture followed by death. No Bloodeye has ever risked betraying her for fear of what she'd do.

That said, the position comes with a great deal of respect and freedom, too. Bloodeyes aren't subject to the same rules as everyone else in Kolkuzhn (such that they are), and only answer to the Captain.

Operation

Off shore

Bloodscale's ship features a much larger crow's nest than any normal ship. While at sea, her Bloodeyes all stay up here.

They don't serve as normal members of the crew, but take shifts to maintain a constant 24/7 watch, gliding in the air around the ship, perching on the very tip of the mast for a better view, and often scouting nearby landmasses or ships.

On shore

Whether on rooftops, high branches, or rocky outcrops on cliffs, the Bloodeyes always accompany Bloodscale when she alights, keeping an eye on her and everyone around her.

They maintain just enough of a distance so that you might not notice them at first, while staying close enough that, if you decided to approach the pirate queen, their wings and gravity would help their claws pin you to the ground before you were in spitting distance.

Wings for your wings

One of the many benefits of being a Bloodeye is Bloodscale's insistence on funding a custom-fitted pair of wing extensions made from adolescent silk.

Incredibly expensive, and the envy of any kliasta who enjoys their natural ability to fly (so, pretty much everyone), these greatly enhance a kliasta's ability to glide, and reduce the effort needed to maintain or increase height.

This investment is self-serving, of course. Bloodscale simply wants her guards to be as effective as possible.

Spooky scary skeletons

The tilken/kliasta skull cut into the wing extensions is intended to be the same design as Bloodscale's instantly recognisable flag design.

Say what you like about the pirate queen, but her style and branding are on point.

Nice article. It is pretty interesting that the guards actually keep watch while flying around. That the crows nest is bigger for the ship is a nice detail you added there :)

Thanks! Yeah, all these prompts have definitely spawned some cool ideas that will need refining / revisiting.
