Old Baytowne Settlement in Districts of Calamity | World Anvil

Old Baytowne

Old Baytowne is a medium-sized fishing and ferry settlement between the DeeCee and the Cheapskate bay. Composed of primarily Baywalkers and the Rovers that call the place "home" half the time, they mainly fish, keep the local River Hunters and Tanks away, and help man the ferry that takes people back and forth across the water to and from the narrower part of Bailey South. While the Rovers are friendly enough, the Baywalkers are untrusting of any strange non-Baywalker faces lingering in their town for too long, and often do what they can to get people in and out quickly. Their abundance of fish and the rich soil from the bay's silt and sand make it a popular spot to get fresh food, and the people of Old Baytowne aren't much bothered by simple shamblers with their homes being built atop a very high, ancient cliff face, surrounded by a tall fence. Shamblers have a tougher time traveling in the muck and bog of DeeCee in general, and the closer you get to the Bay the more true that is. The time after the Fall has put much of the land underwater as-is, and anything that was left was just high enough to stay above it all… except the towering Cliffs. Old Baytowne has a great vantage point, overlooking both the Bay and the surrounding land.

HISTORY

Nobody is entirely sure when Old Baytowne was properly founded, and if any record did exist it has likely been washed out to sea by The Great Cane. It is commonly thought by locals to pre-date the proper 'formation' of the much larger Baytowne farther north. What IS known is that some 80-odd years ago, Grayson Reilly was elected Mayor and transformed the town to what it is today. He built a symbiotic relationship with the ferry Rovers by offering them Hospitality and Home, and in exchange for this kindness the town got a boom in business. Then, the title of Mayor was elected to his daughter Sarah. Alongside her is her husband, Logan Quinn, and they've managed the town together for as long as most could remember.

POPULATION

Though the town is medium-sized, they mistrust any new faces and such, rarely get fresh settlers in. They have the Mayor and her family, their Master Brewer, a Doctor and apprentice, a small town guard, the ferry Rover families that come and go, a traditional Tattooist, and a handful of fishers and farmers and their families. The ferry Rovers will often leave their young children with the Baywalkers fpr safekeeping, and come back to them every few months as they get better at learning the basics of being on the water. Each crop of adults all grew up together, as have their children, and likely will their children's children.
