As a result of the Lapse, temperatures kept rising and eventually the polar ice melted, sinking most of Northern Europe, the United States and Russia. The developed countries of the North annexed their southern neighbors, sometimes peacefully but on most occasions by force, during a period that came to be known as the Descent Wars.
PRC consumed Russia in a brief but devastating conflict for dominance. Canada conceded to become the 51st state and followed the rest of the US in its southern course. The European Union crumbled at the very beginning of the crisis, leading the richest northern countries to wage war on their southern neighbors, until they finally reached and settled in Africa.
The result was the creation of the three main super-nations:
The ruthless wars combined with the extreme heat created enormous waves of environmental refugees who tried to reach safety. Millions of people from all around the world flocked to cities that had no infrastructure to receive or accommodate them. Every major city became a Babel of languages and cultures.
