Nova City

Owned and governed by NovaCorp, Nova City is the world's largest human settlement. Population data only counts humans, but they say there's 1.3 curses for every human.

Demographics

About 1% or less of the population is wealthy enough to live in the upper city, and around 60% are in poverty and/or forced to work for NovaCorp as debt slaves. Pretty unfair if you ask me. But when it comes to ethnicity, after the Cataclysm, refugees fled here from various cities and countries. English is the official language, but in some sub-districts you'll find others spoken more frequently. The following ethnic data was taken from a census in 2075:
Race and Origin Population Percentage
White 40%
Hispanic or Latino 30%
Black or African American 24%
Asian 15%
American Indian 1%

Government

NovaCorp is in charge, and they tax most of us into debt. The Knights are used as law enforcement, dispatched as judge, jury, and executioner to imprison or harass those suspected of breaking the law. If you're visiting our lovely city, just keep your head down and don't look any Knights in the eye, and they might leave you alone.

Industry & Trade

Most residents work in NovaCorp's factories, manufacturing food and materials that can't be acquired naturally after the Cataclysm. NovaCorp trades with other settlements for luxurious foreign products, but most of us will never see anything like that.

Infrastructure

Mass public transportation is available through a system of elevated trains, what we call "the El." Self-driving taxis are also available, but they're expensive. NovaCorp has high fees on cars, so personally-owned vehicles are almost never seen in the lower city.

Districts

A giant hydroelectric dam splits Nova City into two major districts: the upper city and the lower city.

Upper City

NovaCorp's headquarters is located here, along with housing, farms, a hospital, and a prestigious academy that are only available to the company's elite and wealthy employees.

Lower City

NovaCorp's factories and the majority of the population are crammed together below the dam. Down here, we get a lot of power shortages, debt, and oppression.

Guilds and Factions

Though NovaCorp and the Knights dictate nearly everything in Nova City, they're always struggling for power against the curse-eaters who stand up to their oppression and fight for freedom. Citizens can use secret codes to ask the curse-eaters for help, and rumor is, the curse-eaters are trying to gain independence for the lower city.

Points of interest

A bustling sub-district of the lower city, called Market Street, is a popular spot for lower city residents to shop for non-factory-made products. Each individual shop is run by a private owner, who pays operating fees to the owner of Market Street, who pays taxes to NovaCorp. Market Street is located on a harbor and therefore always smells like fish. You get used to it after a while.

Natural Resources

Situated between a river, a lake, and a coastline, Nova City has no shortage of water and seafood. Seafood is the only fresh and natural food that those of us in the lower city can afford; with limited farm land, only the wealthy of the upper city are able to grow their own crops, while everyone else is left with factory-made synthetics. And believe me, you can taste the difference.

Nice Cyberpunk city with some cool ideas. Feels quite dystopian.
