Fabiana Flores

Fabiana Flores

The fabiana flores is a strange and very rare plant. Found in small patches in the forests of Costrus only the most dedicated of mages know how they come to be and the best ways to use them. They're also mana rich and stable enough that even regular people without training know these plants can be used in healing tinctures, potions, and other basic alchemical mixtures.

Their flowers are used to make medicines when no other treatments are working, or if a disease is rapidly spreading through the area. The effect is nearly immediate and towns that are close to fabiana groves have recipes and alchemical knowledge very specific to these plants. Some even come close to a new mages' ability to use them.

The location of these groves is closely guarded by the settlements around them, and the plants are only harvested for other towns and cities in times of extreme distress. It is no simple feat to get the fabiana to grow, and over harvesting the plant could hurt future growth, a lesson that was learned through the now extinct sundrop lotus.

Night Harvest

Their glowing nature means these plants are easier to spot during the night and are often harvested during fullmoon nights. Not for any specific reason other than the full moon provides more light to navigate the forest while staying dark enough to make the plant stand out.

Most often the plant is only harvested when it is required, and never in excess. Everyone who harvests these plants knows their value, but not how the plant grows or how long the plant will continue to grow in a forest grove.

How to Grow a Fabiana Flores

Fabiana flores plants are the product of many perfect conditions lining up. First, the area must be mana rich and able to support grave thistles. Secondly, the area must be shady enough for verisada mushrooms to grow, these mushrooms parasitize and concentrate the mana within the grave thistles. Third, there must be enough light filtering down to support the growth of the stella frilla flower. If a stella frilla's seeds are dusted with the spores of the verisada, and the lighting and soil are just right a fabiana will grow.

Beneath the Soil

Those well versed in the earliest histories of humans in Costrus would notice that the verisada mushrooms and fabiana flores grow almost exclusively on ancient yildae mass graves. These areas are great sinks of mana and even a thousand years later the mana contained and collected in the soil is significant. The grave thistles here tend to have a brighter glow and some mages have successfully encouraged the fabiana flores to grow in small patches on known grave sites. These plants are not suitable to grow on a large or industrial scale for use due to the specific growing conditions they require, and if the mana is drained from an area faster than it can refill the fabiana and verisada mushrooms wilt and the other mana dense plants will glow dimmer.

Grave Thistles

by RandoScorpio via MidJourney

Grave thistles are named for their abundance in graveyards. The more mana available in a graveyard the more thistles will grow. They're good for a journeyman mage like yourself because they have an abundance of mana. However, if you don't know how to stabilize them it can go wrong in a hurry. Most people simply don't know how to make use of them so they leave them alone.
— A Mage's Botony Lesson

Almost everyone here knows how to use a grave thistle. It's so readily available and pretty easy to use in simple mixtures. Talk to Arina if you need help, she's the best at making our fuel.

Stella Frilla

by RandoScorpio via MidJourney

We leave the frillas. Never pluck the flowers, they are so unstable they could explode in your hands. Now stay close and I'll show you which ones we need.

Stella Frilla. Commonly taught to be unstable, but easily dealt with by trained mages. Best paired with minna roots and Tatia's flower petals to both stabilize and concentrate.

Verisada Mushrooms

The mushrooms are mana dense and very stable. A good stand in if you can't find a fabiana, but still a step down in quality.

We're lucky there was a court mage apprentice passing through. Those soldiers almost ruined a whole grove of dormant verisadas.

A very beautiful and well done article but what is this strange plant a mushroom or a flower or both? Please let it be both, then it would be a really great idea.

Stay imaginative and discover Blue´s Worlds, Elaqitan and Naharin.

It is both! :) I was inspired by the chat in the discord to give it a complicated life cycles and make it both a mushroom and a plant!
