King Magnus character and hero from the epic fantasy series the Chronicles of Covent

King Magnus

Written by jlficks

King Magnus is the current reigning king of Doljinaar. He is a fair and just man, though he has an implicit mistrust for magic due in part to a near lethal mistake his brother made as a boy. King Magnus' reign has been ruled by mostly peace in Doljinaar and he has proven a wise ruler, but he has known little peace. His efforts have been spent in bloody skirmishes at the borders and so peace under his reign has come at the cost of blood on the many protective fronts of Doljinaar, preventing dangerous raids of night mortals from invading the West.

King Magnus’ eyes glow a solid majestic white like other members of the royal line. This feature, along with unusually long life, are marks of the royal line in Doljinaar, which have given rise to the belief the blood of the gods runs through their veins. The royal line is commonly referred to as Thanes in Doljinaar and it is believed they ascend into godhood when they die. Thanes can live about two thousand years, which is about four times as long as a normal human.

The king carries the famous enchanted sword Dol’liberus, the Sword of Kings. Dol'liberus is a family heirloom held by the reigning king of Doljinaar for thousands of years and symbolizes the king's role as Protector of the West. Dol'liberus glows with majestic white flames said to be holy flames embued with the power of the gods. This sword was handed down from generation to generation, starting with the founder of Doljinaar, High King Doljinn himself.

King Magnus' trust in magic eroded over years, like his father’s before him, due to the death tolls of many wars and massacres brought on by rebel or mages who went mad with power. Magnus finally outlawed magic after the Norfolk Massacres where a single mad warlock burned half the city and killed over 10,000 people. The king's brother Phendyrimoth still contests the abolishment of magic since he is head of the High Mage Order, but magic has been forced underground in Doljinaar.
