Dragons

Written by jlficks

Dragons are often called the kings of beasts of Covent, both from their place at the top of the food chain to their resemblance to the ancient Elder Dragons. Unlike the Elder Dragons of legend, normal dragons don’t possess the ability to speak or reason. In fact, the existence of Elder Dragons has been gone from the world so long, few believe there is such a thing as a talking dragon. Dragons hunt and kill like most carnivores, but are widely feared across all Covent. Depending on the species, dragons breathe fire, ice, poison and a variety of other elements.   Dragons come in a wide range of species from the King Drakes of many different colors of scale, to the grazing Behemoths, to the smaller pack-hunting Wyverns. Often times when Covent’s inhabitants speak of dragons they generally reference the alpha Drake species, but there are many kinds of dragons. Dragons can be aerial, terrestrial, live in deep earth caves or even dwell beneath the ocean depths. Dragon species come in all shapes and sizes, and ironically enough some are even herbivores.   Despite being the king alpha species, dragons are slowly disappearing from the world. Due to a combination of powerful climate changes brought on by cataclysmic events and over-hunting by mortals, slowly taking over the world, dragons are on the verge of extinction. Dragons are becoming a rarity in the world of Covent, but it often makes their appearance all the more terrifying and catastrophic. Most dragons live in the Elderlands, a rare preserved, prehistoric land, although a small handful of species still dwell in the vast forgotten realms below both the earth and seas.
The Elderlands is nestled between the Dragontooth Mountains and the fiery mountains of Douggdoom to the north, creating an abnormally warm climate south of the equator. Many of the carnivorous species of dragons such as the Red Drakes, were once tamed by the Drakor, otherwise known as dragon men. However, the Drakor were cursed and lost control of the great beasts, who now prey upon them. Still, the dragon men have not given up and keep many dragons chained up, beating them in an attempt to break their wills. Of course, if the dragon breaks free the Drakor pay dearly for such harsh treatment.   There was a time when dragons were used to deadly effect. Humans called it the Time of Terror. The Drakor called it the Reign of Fire, which was the glorious period the dragon men tamed the Red Drakes and reigned down fire on the West. Thousands died and dozens of cities and towns were burned to the ground. It was during this period that Dragonbows were invited and mounted atop Doljinaarian war fortresses and watchtowers to keep the dragons out of the West. The Time of Terror was ended by an unlikely alliance of Men, Dwarves and Gorums, who marched on the tower cities of Doruggdoom and managed to destroy several of the nearly impregnable tower cities. Countless weary Doljnn guards still man the watchtowers and watch the skies to this day…
