When an ally is about to be attacked, you can redirect the attack, potentially making it miss. You use your reaction to impose a penalty dice (base d4) to the attack. You must be using a shield or a weapon to use this maneuver.
Alternatively, you can force yourself to take the damage, rather than apply a penalty dice. The attack is considered a success, even if it fails to meet your AC.
