Why Onions make you cry
So long ago, there was this goddess named Allium. Flowers and Herbs were her domain. She made countless green things, many of which we still don't know about. Her most prized creation was going to be the Onion. She fashioned the onion to have many layers, symbolizing the stages of life. Then there was her brother, the god of seeds and mischief... Lokus. The two were twins, their power was linked, and the two couldn't create without the other.
As Lokus gave his power to the design of the Onion, he cursed it and tarnished Allium's creation. Whoever peels the layers of an onion will be overcome with the sudden urge to cry uncontrollably and he gave it a bitter taste. Anyone who cries from peeling an onion will be seen as a joke, and with the bitter taste, people will refuse to eat them!
Allium was furious that Lokus put this design in the creation of the Onion, and with the seeds of creation spread across the Earth, it couldn't be undone. Lokus laughed with delight that peeling an onion did exactly what he designed, but something unforeseen happened.
As civilization grew, people saw the bitter and tear creating onion as one of the most powerful of foods. It symbolized many things, but most important of all it symbolized empathy. Crying when peeling an onion means that Allium had blessed you and your soul was cleansed of negative emotions. Shedding tears was not a sign of weakness, but of strength and resolve. The Onion became a symbol of purity.
Lokus felt quite humiliated by this. Allium said that this might teach him a lesson that no matter their godly intentions, humanity will give it a different meaning. Lokus didn't respond to his sister's words, instead thinking that the next time, the next plant they create together, he will corrupt it and achieve his goals in the end.
