The Divine Finger

The divine finger is a 5-meter tall natural monolith located in Nampyeon, near the western city of Ulorido. It's often used as a point of reference for the border between Nampyeon and Yeoheung, although Nampyeon firmly claims it's located within its borders. The monolith is the center of several legends and myths, and it's said to be where the Revelation of the Seven Gods began.

Description

The divine finger is a single large stone that sits vertically in the middle of a almost perfectly round field. It looks as if the monolith was placed by someone on top of a concave stone, but any attempts to move it have been fruitless. The stone resembles granite with crimson veins of corundum. However, while the corundum has been identified as such, no geologist has been able to confirm that the rest of the monolith is, in fact, granite. This suggests that it could be some sort of moonstone, a theory supported by the light it sheds during when a full moon's light touches it directly. This theory conflicts with the fact that it doesn't seem to have any kind of interaction with any of the selenurgically active minerals (including the corundum already embedded in the monolith). Whatever the case may be, its nature is stil an ongoing debate that has spun dozens of legends and myths.

Related legends

There is a strong cultural association between the monolith and the seven Pyeonic gods (hence its name). Even though the official story points at Hawong as the place where the Revelation happened, many people believe that it actually took place on the divine finger. Five centuries have passed since then, and yet people pass on stories about their ancestors who were there when it happened.   Other than this religious event, there are several folktales related to the monolith. A very popular one details the story of a child who got lost and thanks to the spirits of the snow (common in Pyeonic folklore as a symbol of home) found its way back by following a path marked by seven monoliths. The consensus is that the other six monoliths are an invention of this legend and are meant to be understood just as a symbol.
