Appendix N

Inspiration

This list is incomplete and is a work in progress. I return here occasionally to jot items down as I remember them

The following sources have strongly influenced and inspired the Chronicles of Arn setting. I have gleefully and liberally taken ideas, concepts, characters and locations and mixed them together to form my own setting. In some cases I borrowed them wholesale and simply repackaged them to fit. I am eternally grateful to the authors, artists, directors, and actors who gave me so much entertainment and joy consuming their works and who inspired me to cobble together my own from the fruits of their fertile imaginations.

  • J. R. R. Tolkien, Collected works, especially The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion
  • Ursula K. LeGuin, the Earthsea trilogy (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, and The Farthest Shore)
  • Kathryn Kurtz, the Deryni books, particularly the The Chronicles of the Deryni series, The Legends of Camber of Culdi series, The Histories of King Kelson series, and Deryni Magic
  • Barbara Hambly, the Darwath trilogy
  • Roger Zelazny, Collected works, especially the first Amber series, Dilvish the Damned, The Changing Land, The Lord of Light, Creatures of Light and Darkness, and Jack of Shadows
  • Stephen Brust, the Vlad Taltos/Dragaera books
  • Robert E. Howard, collected Conan stories
  • Terry Brooks, The Sword of Shannara
  • Eric Schlichting, my old DM
  • Stephen R. Donaldson, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
  • Anne McCaffrey, Dragonriders of Pern series (as explained to me—I haven't read it)
  • Robert Asprin, the Myth Adventures series and the Thieves' World anthologies (editor)
  • Witchblood
  • Dream Park
  • Various AD&D and D&D books, settings, and accessories
