Pirate's Bluff

Pirate's Bluff is a dice game where players attempt to deceive each other about who has the best five dice.

How To Play

  1. Players are assigned a position. This position will later determine who goes first.
  2. At the beginning of a round, wagers are placed.
  3. All participants roll 5d6 in private, usually under a dice cup.
  4. The first player is selected to call their bet. This can be done by rolling a die to determine what position goes first.
  5. Players take turns bidding on the face value of their dice and the number of dice equal to that face value. On their turn, a player can optionally raise their wager. Other players must match their wager, call their bluff, or fold.
  6. On their turn, a player can challenge the previous player's dice bid (call their bluff), or make a new dice bid. They must raise either the dice value, or the number of dice.
  7. Once a player accuses another of "bluffing", the accusee's dice are revealed.
  8. If their bid matches their dice, they win. Otherwise, the accuser wins the pot.
  9. If the accuser is incorrect, they forfeit their wager and are out of the current round.
    Payouts:
  • 80% to the winner
  • 20% to the house
    Example Round:
  • Alice and Broz play a round of Pirate's Bluff. They start by wagering 10 gold each and then each roll 5d6 in private, taking note of each die's value.
  • Alice is selected to make the first dice bid. She bids two 1s - that two of her dice landed on 1s.
  • Broz thinks this is plausible, but he rolled well. He bids three 3s, which he has.
  • Alice reads Broz and thinks he might be telling the truth. She bets two 4s, which she also has, and raises the wager by 5 gold.
  • Broz matches the 5 gold wager and quickly bets one 5.
  • Alice needs to decide whether Broz is bluffing. She thinks he probably has three 3s, and there's a good chance that one of his other dice is a 5 if he just raised the bet. However, she doesn't have any dice higher than 4. She decides to bluff and bids two 5s.
  • Broz takes note that Alice decided not to raise again, and she has now bet 6 different dice values. He thinks that she may be bluffing, so he calls her bluff.
  • Devastated, Alice reveals her dice - 1, 1, 4, 4, 3. Broz wins the pot!
  • Because he won, Broz doesn't have to reveal his dice. His dice were 3, 3, 3, 4, 6.
