Confra Condition in Ardre | World Anvil

Confra

Confra is an illness found in southern Milos. Contracted from the bite of a wolf, as well as a handful of other animals, confra is a disease that drives its victims to violent madness, compelling them to attack their friends and family. Worse still, it compels them to bite and maul, passing the disease on to others.   The madness is oft said to have originated in Bastis, despite the canton's relatively northerly position, but this assumption is likely due to the Bastis's association with dogs. Many breeds of dog have been noted to be vulnerable to confra, which many see as proof of their brotherhood with wolves, suggesting that dogs are ultimately no more trustworthy than their wild cousins. More than one tale is told of a heartbroken father putting down his faithful hound after being forced to slay his own maddened children. The spellers of Cantef have even said the old Deinain devil, Nabas the Wolf of Night, was inspired by tales of confra destroying small villages.   It is oft rumored that in the Fiirwood in southern Revellia, the Siiari have found ways to survive the illness and live with the crazed bloodlust it endows, even passing it on to their children. This of course feeds into the rumors of werewolves running rampant in the Fiirwood. Some have also seen links between confra, werewolves, and the Bura clan of the Aernigh.   No one knows where confra comes from. Spellers have suggested wolves contract it from cannibalizing other wolves, while rock worshippers will claim a man might catch it by drinking water from a wolf's paw print, eating uncooked flesh from a wolf or dog, or even howling under a full moon. The source remains mysterious, but there is no confusion on the cure: a sharp knife and an iron will.
