Blackvale Fables & Folklore

Hawking, Archery, and Independence

Recurring Theme, Lore, or Symbolism

  • Blackvale is based around hawking and archery, and their cultural memory of the Others and Fae culture runs deep. Different from most other regions, Blackvalians are at ease with the Others and make accommodations for them. Indeed, Blackvalians seek Faeries and Faerie blessings.
  • On the religious front, Wiltanism is deeply rooted here.

Local Creatures

  • Salmon on knowledge (see Bestiary)
  • Horned Owl Mages—These are wizard owls who may speak. They may be earth spirits, or maybe Others, but they guard their secrets closely. These owls have been seen at noble courts, or advising human wizards.
  • Oak Maids—These are a variant or subclass of dryads, being oak tree spirits who appear as young maids. They are timid but friendly, unless someone threatens their personal tree body.
  • Wulvers—Small family groups of wulvers exist in the old-growth forests, and they are reclusive and keep to themselves.

Heroes & Monsters of Myth and Folklore

  • Horror of Klondith—In Klondith, there is a cairn, still covered by a cyclopean stone, that has imprisoned something. This entity is covered in more detail in the Bestiary, under Unique Beings.
  • In the forests of Aarach, there is a disquieting legend of a hulking man who captures, bones, and engages in cannibalism, eating his victims. His name is Gaheris, and his legend is tied to regional caves.
  • Otus Hootfeather—Blackvale is the source for this beloved hero of fable, Otus Hootfeather, the wisest of owls and master of magic. His role in fables is to advise the hero, and grant him the wisdom and magik that the character will need in his adventures. In most tales, Otus is a grandfatherly figure, but in other stories he is a strict judge, not afraid to pass tough sentences.
  • Sir Silvaros the Knight of Ladies, is a legendary predator who charms maidens with poetry, song, and fatal charisma. He strangles his victims, and his Faerie nature becomes clear when he drains the dying maids of their youth, maintaining his own extended life.

Historical Sites

  • Elf Dance—This is a series of dolmens in Aarach.
  • Ol’ Circle—This a stone circle, but one built of Kui-kor stones. If roused into activity, interactions may be risky.
  • Mirror of Souls—A mystic pool or water feature in Lower Blackvale, said to be stocked with salmon of knowledge (see Bestiary)

Magic on the Landscape

  • The old growth forests of Aarach have a disquieting reputation for disorientation, high strangeness, and untraceable terrifying sounds (screams, moans, growls) that harass travelers. Natives know their way around these difficulties.
  • There is a convincing paranoia here that Blackvale owls are purposely keeping surveillance on travelers, judging them. For more on these creatures, see above.
