Bhergdolian
This windswept, cold, and uninviting island is now independent, but once it belonged to Aorlis and it would take little provocation for Aorlis to arm a fleet and invade. The emperor has a blood claim to Bhergdollian, but it is just as likely that Burlami colonialists or Free Reavers might attempt to make this island their own. While there are a few villages and homesteads, the only town on Berghdollian is Greater Meadhall. These people cling to the worship of the Hanged God, the Wandering Concealer of Jotun paganism. The natives still speak Skalling. Berghdollian is rugged, inhospitable, with many heaths, and good for little besides grazing native sheep. This island lies far to the north of Aorlis, just off the west coast of Yllione, in the frigid Arlyn Ocean.
Resources are minimal, and it imports far more than it exports, but Berghdollian is within the North Arlyn economic sphere. This states value lies in its strategic location and access to the northern markets. Its climate leans to the cool side of an oceanic zone. In ancient times, Berghdollian was part of Yllione, but in 810 it was conquered by Jotuns from Fiordlunde. (Yllione considers Berghdollian a wayward state that still belongs to them.) They allied with Aorlis in 1179 by marrying one of their own with an Aorlisian emperor. By 1200, that union fell into abeyance, leaving the island as an independent state for the first time. The Mathurne family also has blood ties here because one Aldith Mathurne married into the island’s reigning Bruenson house.
