Allyn Fables & Folklore

A high, mountainous kingdom with the most dramatic vistas in Aorlis

Recurring Theme, Lore, or Symbolism

  • Its culture was born around mountain life, as well as devotion to quality craftsmanship.
  • Allyn has never been far from its pagan roots, and even now its church faces Arpethianism to the East, and Wiltanism influence in the West.

Local Creatures

  • This wild, untamed, snow-capped land has many local creatures. High in the mountains, there are troglodyte family groups, marauding ghost winds, and lone mondig on the prowl.
  • There are even said to be giants higher up, but no one has seen any in centuries.
  • Below, in the valleys and passes of the human domains, there also are rumored to be were-bears.

Historical Figures

  • As historical figures go, King Loethgar the Apostate, last of the house of Torenth and Wollyn, kept his capital here.
  • When he built his tomb here, Cyning Vale (which means King’s Vale) Loethgar carefully hid it from his many enemies, who would gladly desecrate it.
  • Folktales place Cyning Vale in modern Khel or Borly, secreted among inaccessible gorges.
  • Magron, master of the Ashen Twilight, has the distinction of being both a historical figure and a modern man.

Heroes & Monsters of Myth and Folklore

  • Legend holds that the alpha dragon Thranxus kept his lair in Dracolaird. This fits that place’s name, because Dracolaird translates as Dragon’s Lair. It widely is assumed that dragon-kind died out many centuries ago.
  • Burley Brownsedge is the beloved, bumbling bear hero of many fables, and those began here. Now is amusing adventures and mishaps are told throughout Aorlis.

Historical Sites

  • The Fastness—In the East Aendril Mountains, overlooking Skygate from an unassailable position high in the clouds, is the Fastness. Here the Ashen Twilight rules. They have their hand throughout the Auldic court, and there is no way to remove them. Allyn pays punishing protection money every year to keep the Ashen Twilight in their frozen castle as good neighbors.
  • Dolmans of Borl—On Borly’s east slopes, and the East Aendril’s wind down toward the Eofwin Forest, is an Iron Age hill fort, and within it are an impressive series of dolmans. Their purpose is not remembered, but the visages of bearded men are carved into the dolmans’ east faces.

Material History

  • If the artificers in Skygate City know how to make anything, it is astounding and lifelike automata of all sorts. These sophisticated clockwork machines can accomplish any task they were built for. Most Aorlisian clocks and automated orreries come from Skygate.
