Spiritual Beings

Spiritual Beings are metaphysical, supernatural beings that exist beyond the physical realm. They exist in many religious, mystical, and are present throughout the media (TV Shows, Movies, Comics, Books, and Video and Board Games amd TTRPG's).

Characteristics of Spiritual Beings

interpretations may vary in both media and real-life examples but several common characteristics are shared even across real-life cultures and media.

Intangible Nature

Being spirits, they are generally regarded as non-material entities. This just means they have no true physical forms. Their existence is not bound by the physical laws of whatever universe they're apart of. Mostly due to them not exisiting within whatever realm the material beings do.

Consciousness and Intelligence

Many traditions attribute both consciousness and intelligence to these beings who have no physical bodies.
Other things attributed to them include awareness of the world and the ability to communicate with material beings (directly or through symbols or other means).

Varied Forms and Roles

Spirits take many forms. Angels and demons are spiritusal beings. But so are those of nature and other realms.
Spirits also can be human or animal ancestors. Their roles, varied. Guiding, messengers, protecting, influencing events, and more.

Types of Spiritual Beings

Nature Spirits - Guardians of Natural World or of the weather. May be revered or appeased to maintain balance and harmony.
Ancestors and Deities - Mainly human or humanoid species who may influence the lives of their descendants. If pets, may be providing comfort to the family. Species ancestors are often honored through rituals, offerings or other means.
Deities, also often spiritual beings, are honored through rituals, myths, and offerings. Their powers govern different aspects of existence.

Functions of Spiritual Beings

Guidance, Warning, Assistance, and Protection - Spiritual beings offer guidance, warnings, assistance, or protection. Sometimes inspiration.
Everything depends on what the recipient, including towns, need. That's the simple truth!
Compass of Morals and Ethics Influencers - Spiritual beings may also play a role in shaping people's moral and ethical compass. When embodying certain virtues, they are examples of what to emulate. For vices, the opposite.
Deity Connection Spiritual beings may also serve as intermediaries between the mortals and other species and the gods. Wether it be communication, help, or just those who wish to give thanks, these people help to facilitate all of the above.
