Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is located on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its substantial collection includes items from around the world.   The South American collection represents many of the museum's longest-held items. They were collected in the period 1850-1870 by Louis Agassiz and Alexander Emanuel Agassiz. While both men were polymaths, neither made any particular effort to conduct a thorough archaeological investigation of the region nor to develop long-lasting ties with local experts and authorities. The museum is currently looking to reestablish itself as a primary institute for the study of Andean cultures.
