Witch Ethnicity in The Heartlands | World Anvil

Witch

Witch is an umbrella term for the multi-generational offspring of human and mystic relations whom have inherited their mystic parent or ancestor's power. Used as both a self-identifier and as a pejorative by the rest of the human population, Witches make up roughly 1% of the surviving human population. This population lives primarily in self-segregated border communities.

What is a Witch?

It is commonly accepted that a Witch is a human with the capacity to witness, understand, and manipulate magic, though some argue that any one of these items is enough to qualify a person for the title.

The only known sentient species in the multiverse which did not naturally evolve the capability to use magic, Humans solved the issue by doing what they do best: they innovated. Shortly following the discovery of the Gates, humans inadvertently created their own population of magic users through cross-breeding with the magic-capable species of other Realms.

All members of this group, though highly diverse due to the wildly divergent capabilities of their mystic ancestries, are collectively known as Witches.

Ancestry

Within the Witching Community, a Witch's Ancestry denotes their mystical lineage and the power sets an individual is likely to have. It is notable that while Witches from different Ancestries are capable of producing children, said children will exhibit powers from either one Ancestry or the other—never both.*

Dhampir

The bloodsucking, day-walking children of humans and Vampires known for their surprising strength, speed, and self-healing capabilities. They are among the least versatile of the Witches, but compensate with longevity and utility.

Changeling

Energetic as they are mercurial, these children of humans and the Gentry are versatile lot whose power sets are dictated according to their familial Court. With the Fae, everything comes back to the building blocks of nature: earth, fire, water, air, and blood.

Were-

The children of humans and Shapeshifters are limited to a single full-form natural shifting ability which imitates their Shapeshifting ancestry. Though they encompass many different sub-breeds, the weres are the fighters of the Witching world; their gifts are often more physical than metaphysical.

Imítheos

A catch all term for any Witch born of a crossing between a human and one of the beings from the Realm of Olympos. This group has such a wide variety of sub-breeds that making any overall statement about their powersets is moot.

Dragonkin

Split into two major varieties, the Dragonkin are born of a union between a human and a Dragons of either eastern or western tradition. Eastern dragonkin trend toward water-based elemental manipulation and healing, while their western counterparts favor fire-based elemental manipulation and offensive magics.

*Never is a strong word, and there are legends and rumors about this happening in very, very rare circumstances. However, most magic is limited to mixing with only it's in-Realm counterparts. For example, as Shapeshifters and Vampires are both from the Heathers it is far more likely for their descendants magic to mix than a Vampire and a Fae, which are from different Realms.
