Changeling

Changelings are the first-generation result of Fae Folk magic attempting to merge with Humans biology, whose offspring make up a large percentage of the witch population within the Mundane Realm.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Except for their Witchmarks, Changelings bear no overt biological differences from their human counterparts. However, due to the unusual circumstances of their births, they will always resemble their Human parent to a great extent. While it is theorized that the Fae magic involved in their conception scrambles the genes enough to make them conceptionally different from their Human parent, for many Changelings this resemblance is strong enough to be uncanny.

Witchmark

The Changeling witchmark is a gem-like band around the Changeling's pupils that changes colour with the Changling's mood, thus why those of Changeling descent are sometimes referred to as "mood rings."

Genetics and Reproduction

The production of a Changeling is a strange practice which may or may not involve any sexual acts. While these children are usually the result of a romantic dalliance between a Fae and Human, they may also result from deep platonic affection provided the circumstances are right. While the specifics are still much debated, and rarely studied, the base requirements for a Changeling birth are well known:

  • Two (or potentially more) willing Fae partners*

  • A Human partner capable of bearing children

The Fae partner(s) imbue their Human counterpart with their magic. This can work at any time, but is thought to be easiest upon a day wherein the Veil between the Mundane Realm and Faerie is at it's thinnest, such as All Hallow's Eve, and when the Human partner is ovulating. Within a month, the Human partner will discover if they are pregnant or not.

*It is also speculated that the Fae partners' magic must be compatible in nature.
