Ancient Valnorian Language in The Chronicles of Evalaw | World Anvil

Ancient Valnorian

The Valnorian language is a Aelfaune - Elves. dialect that has vanished from the surface since the conclusion of the sundering. In its aftermath the remnants of the Valnorians that survived, the Baus'quie, were unaffected by the curse of abolition would continue to speak their mother tongue for centuries after. It's use would slowly diminish as the common Aelfaune tongue would become wider spread, and supplant Valnorian. By the the end of the third millennium, Valnorian as a spoken dialect had completely vanished from Lorthwyn. Only relics and ancient ruins would pertain the runic language of their ancestors. Much of which would be seized or defaced and destroyed the Aurloriens and the sunburst sepulchre as heretical, wishing to further expunge all evidence of the Sundering. Anyone caught in possession of such items is branded a heretic and dealt with by sepulchre law.   Despite its decline across Lorthwyn and the surface of Evalaw, Ancient Valnorian endured in the underworld. The old tongue is exclusively by the Dral'azie Nobility and members of the Magi as a language of their own, seldom understood by the lowborn to establish another social divide between the classes. It is well established that most noble children are taught from a young age Valnorian, and are judged highly on their fluency in it biweekly by their mothers. It is considered of crucial importance to be able to articulate the old tongue precisely and effectively when engaged in high society. The ability to wield the language and it's vocabulary to a high calibre is a fundamental indicator of one's social status and breeding. It would be considered a terrible scandal for a highborn to be inept in high Valnorian, showing weakness in not only yourself but your house.   The vast majority of the Dral'azie written language is in Valnorian, very little has been put into the far more accessible common Dral'azie common tongue; a successor language and script of Valnorian that has evolved over the past three millennia. As such, it has meant that the vast majority of books, arcane knowledge, laws and even holy texts are exclusively within the domain of the elite, having been kept beyond the comprehension of the common folk.
