Chapter IV: The Missing Child

The Tyranny of Tok

General Summary

The unconscious tiefling lies slumped over your shoulders, a thrumming arcane sounds pulses from her back. Glowing circular geometries seem to dance and flicker with lights even as she is unawakened. Looking up at the battered and beaten tiefling, all that can be heard is a faint whisper under her unconscious breath...

"Rudra... I must find my little one."

Awakening the tiefling with a healing spell, her eyes flicker to life. Our three heroes pick her up to her feet and take her to her room, resting Silvantica onto her bed. She explains to them that there is an entrance into the attic from Mystvale's bedroom, but has never seen it for herself. They all enter the room, finding a hidden switch on the floor which releases a latch. Following a passage below the floors that were two sizes too small for Kovash, they slowly make their way to the end of the passage, opening back up into the dining room where Ash had found the suspicious bottle before.

Realizing this wasn't what they were looking for, they all reenter the room being mindful of a pressure plate that was almost triggered by Kovash prior. Exploring the room once more, Kovash was able to find a hidden drawer in one of the cupboards which held a small ornately runic ring inside. Convinced that the entrance, by what Silvantica had told them, would have to be in the closet, Bimpkin continued his search there.

His efforts led him into a master study full of books, scrolls, and maps on various places throughout Averlund and the surrounding areas. After a thorough search throughout the study, they managed to find a sack of gold, a silvered dagger, and blueprints of the mansion, revealing the location into the attic was indeed in the closet they were in.

Finally finding a latch, Bimpkin entered the attic floor with Kovash and Ash following suit. Finding a large trail of blood, Ash lit up their surrounding with a large radius of Light allowing them to investigate their surroundings. Seeing movement in the corner of his eyes, Bimpkin saw movement in the large storage room and began to call out for the child, but to no avail. Eventually, he found a chest that would be apt to hide in that was troublingly close to where the blood trail had ended. Upon searching the contents, the chest transformed into its monstrous form, revealing itself as an infamous aberration of a beast; A mimic.

After a rough battle and Ash taking quite a beating, the three were able to reduce the mimic to splinters which soon liquified into its amorphous true form, flowing onto the ground. Their search for the girl continued. Venturing into the next room, they found themselves in another study, hearing the sound of rain and thunder and the muffled crying of a small girl. A leaky ceiling began to drip down, which Bimpkin soon saw past as in fact saliva dripping from a monstrous being known as a Spectator. A fight with the beast quickly ensued and was quite a match for our heroes, even felling Bimpkin with a blast of necrotic energy from one of its eyestalks. His wounds were moderately healed by the young Ash's celestial magic, and they eventually prevailed against the beast. Bimpkin took the child and reunited her with her weeping mother while Ash and Kovash inspected the room for any clues on what they were looking for.

Finding the plans for the Pacification Bracers and a device to remove them as well as a chest containing potions and gold, they then noticed a beautiful, but covered in dust, longsword that had a faint glow to it. Wiping the dust and allowing its glow to shine bright, Kovash identified it as a sword made from the fragment of the moon, Obis, known as Obinite. Wrapping the blade in cloth so as not to attract attention, Kovash hung the blade from his belt and left to meet back up with Bimpkin and the worried mother.

Helping the mother with a possible place to go and bribing the remaining mercenaries to leave and never come back to Averlund, they all left Mystvale Manor and headed back to the Timid Tortle Tavern with new-found knowledge and way to permanently remove and deactivate Pacification Bracers. Heading into the basement, they find Gretel, Damu, Ophie, and Falisztad awaiting their return...
