Chapter III: Mystvale Manor

The Tyranny of Tok

General Summary

The ornate doors of the Mystvale Manor open themselves to you. To your left, an orc that looks bored out of his wits is picking under his fingernails with a blood-stained dagger. To the right is a staircase that ascends to the second floor. Ahead, a hallway of doors looms in the distance. Who knows what secrets these walls can tell. Now that you're in, surely it's time to investigate what Thomas Mystvale hides within.

Making their way inside the manor, Kovash decides to play it cool and heads into the mudroom to hang his cloak to appear like he belongs to which Ash follows suit. Meanwhile, Bimpkin, however, wanders into the guest room arousing some suspicion to the orc guarding the door. Convincing the orc that they were known, they are instructed to sign in to the logbook upstairs for their shift so they can be properly compensated for their time.

Heading past several guards on the way, they find themselves into the guard check-in spot to which Bimpkin opts to not sign. Ash takes the pen in Celestial writes Mystvale stinks! where her name should be signed. Kovash opts to sign only his initials with his off-hand, making a believable, but distinctively different signature from his own. While in the room, they find a locked door and Ash proceeds in an attempt to pick the lock, unsuccessfully. Bimpkin, with his nimble hands, decides to give it a try and is able to break in.

Taking far too long in the log room, a guard peeks in and questions the three. With his silver-tongue, Bimpkin is able to convince him that the door being unlocked was a problematic event and the guard comes to the conclusion that the two of them need to stand guard while the others continue their patrol as normal. Ash heads downstairs to investigate while Kovash inspects the area the guard left unoccupied. Kovash is able to find several locked doors as well as a door leading into a servant's quarters. Inside he finds several books written in a language he does not understand but recognizes as the infernal tongue from stories he read growing up in his tribe.

Ash finds herself in the kitchen where she sees a halfling patrolling a hall. The halfling seems to be keeping a bit of an eye on her, but continues on his patrol. During that time, Ash slips into the storage room and sees a torn bag of grain. Reaching inside, she finds a small satchel filled with a pungent illicit substance inside. Pocketing it, she looks about the room and being satisfied there is nothing more of import, leaves the room heading first to the preparation room and then to the dining room where she finds scratches on the floor next to a cupboard. Inside the cupboard, a small emptied bottle stuck onto the shelf ominously beckons the aasimar.

Meanwhile, our bubbly drow is talking the proverbial ears off the other guard, making him regret his life choices. He, however, tells Bimpkin of apparent noises and strange occurrences happening from in the attic which is supposedly hidden and guarded by only one designated guard who knows the location. A shout is heard downstairs as Ash cries out in pain and beckoning for help after being spotted by the halfling guard and receiving a side-full of a dagger.

There is a blur of movement from Kovash as he invokes Expeditious Retreat and leaps off of the banister down to the first floor, he sticks the landing though it is a bit rockier than he would've liked and likely was pictured better in his head. A thump is heard as a guard is tripped down the stairs by Bimpkin. There is a flurry of blows dealt, an aura of healing light, a glimmer of faerie dust, a shock of a Pacification Bracer, a blast of sonic energy from a Dragonborn's blade, a boom of a firearm, a slash of guisarme, a previous puncture of a dagger, radiant blast reducing a halfling to dust, and then... Silence.

The immediate danger had passed and after some dialogue between the three, Kovash is convinced not to finish the live guards off for their own protection. Whimpering is heard from the kitchen where two servants hunched crying. Given the gratuity of Ash in the amount of 30G, the maidens are given hope and assist the adventurers. Not only do they lead them to the room of Silvantica and Rudra, but Kovash is also given a burnt document that one of them was instructed to burn by Mystvale. Unsure what proof it brings, he pockets it and continues their investigation.

Hearing crying and a plead for help from beyond a locked door, Bimpkin kicks the door down to see a tiefling bloody and beaten hanging from chains. Releasing her from her bindings, she falls limp in the drow's arm, revealing a glowing sigil on her back that pulses with arcane energies...
