Chapter III: A Father's Disapproval

Relics of Ochrid

General Summary

Liu sat at his desk, ignoring the presence of his son, Nishi. A long moment of awkwardness was intended for the young genasi as the head of the family sat up, adjusting his spectacles and finally looking with disapproval. His silence spoke many words as his brow furled before he finally stands up. "Close the door, Nishi..."

Entering the city of Azijuko, Juniper finally realizes that in his absence, he had missed rehearsals for a performance he was dutied to exhibit at the Celebration of Rest. Making his way straight to the Liu District, he wasted no time in seeking an audience with his father, the head of House Liu. Finding an enthusiastic Rin, June greeted his younger sister with a long embrace. Hearing stories of disappointment from his brother Hun, June's reunion with his sister would have to be cut short.

Standing before his adoptive father, the genasi tried to explain his absence and the mystical event that occurred at the crater-site, but nothing would get past the teeming look of dissatisfaction on the Lyran's face. After a long scold due to June no longer being able to perform in the festival and his forgery for less-than-frugal expenditures in the market two-weeks prior, Liu felt he had no choice but to cut Juniper off, stripping the Liu family seal from his scarf and disowning the fire-child.

Saying his goodbyes to his younger sister and mother, Juniper left the Liu house with his new-found allies and went to seek an escape within the embrace of the celebration. The three adventurers stood before a bard that had grown a crowd before him, playing a treasonous melody outlining the plight of the Forestmaw Rider and his claims of Azijuko's blatant disrespect for Skjadi people's dead. About to be dragged off for his blasphemous crimes, Zal interjected and with the aid of Juniper flashing what might be the last chance of throwing the weight of his family's name, convinced the guards to relinquish the prisoner to them, claiming to be charged with the proper punishment of the Skjadi musician.

Hesitantly, the guards handing the chains to our heroes who led him to a secluded area, setting the man free of his bonds, making an ally of the man identifying himself as Strenjolf of Mael'skaad. Making his way out of the city with due haste, he thanked the adventurers offering them refuge in his hometown, should they ever have business there, telling them to seek him out in the Skjadi village. Wrapping his broken chains in cloth, the bard silently made his way through the streets of Azijuko, leaving under the light of the moon.

Enjoying the night of celebration, the three partook in many of the festivities before retiring to their inn-rooms for the evening. During the night, Adriak awoke in the middle of the Liu square with blood-covered hands. Following the trail of blood, he found himself in an empty alley-way with a destroyed box and a large spatter of blood that crept up the walls of the adjacent buildings. Though he found no signs of a body, he found a blood-stained hairpin that the cervitaur quickly pocketed before returning to his inn-room.

Upon the cresting of the western sun, the adventurers sought out the library, seeking knowledge on various different subjects; Adriak focused on astrology, finding the name of a red star named Indryth while Juniper researched the occurrences of Wild Magic and Genies, while Zal researched the Words of Power.

Finding tales of a medallions forged from the Words of Power, Zal found a story of an Oni possession one such Relics of Ochrid called the Luminous Might to the west. Juniper shared his knowledge of Wild Magic and that the tear they found on the Astral Plane might have unwanted effects on the Material Plane, possibly causing surges of magical activity in the surrounding areas. Adriak, for reasons his own, kept the knowledge of the red star to himself.

Zal proposed the next step upon finishing their business in Azijuko would be to seek out a former member of the Seizyakenbu clan, Autumn Snow, rumored to be located in the jungles to the north. With a clear goal in mind, the three finally headed to the mausoleum to fulfill their promise to the skeletal rider and seek out the body of Helga Forestmaw to finally lay her soul to rest. Finding an entrance and "unlocking" the gate with the finesse only a barbarian such as Juniper could muster, they descended into the tomb.

Sending his pseudodragon ahead, Zal was able to find a key on the dead body of a previous gravekeeper by looking through the eyes of Kogara. Unlocking the second gate before them, they found themselves in a large tomb adorned with oversized caskets and sarcophagi holding the corpses and material possessions of the Lyran people buried below the earth of Azijuko. They halted in front of a door littered with magical glyphs to which Zal recognized as a barrier to keep whatever is held within these doors from escaping. Determining this the best place to look for the corpse of the Hobgoblin wife of Jeremiah, Adriak used a portion of his power to unlock the glyphs and enter the tomb.

Entering a circular room, Zal was mortified by the blatant disregard for the dead, whose corpses littered the ground. Though searching for Helga would be akin to finding a needle in a haystack, they found it hard-pressed to not step on the long-dead corpses of those within the area. Whisps of bluish-grey lights dance throughout the chamber with silent moans of death before culminating into a being made of ghostly silks, chains, and lanterns. Hovering over the heroes, they stood their ground readying themselves for a fight...
