Gnome Species in Oryth | World Anvil

Gnome

A species born of rock, earth, and wood, gnomes have been part of Oryth for many millennia. They prefer to stay among their kind either in the forests or mountains of the world in plentiful clusters all working together in harmony. They tend to have large families and cherish each and every one of them forging the strongest bonds with those they call kin.

Of Oryth and Wood

After the Divine Wars, a god named Garl Glittergold took elements from the Material Plane and sculpted the race of gnome in His image. Giving them a literal heart of gold, their personalities reflected Garl's good nature and love for harmless pranks. Over the years the tribes of gnomes grew into two separate communities, the gnomes of the earth known as Rock Gnomes and the gnomes of the woods known as Forest Gnomes. Though they are of different make and natural abilities, they all consider themselves goldkin.

They Sleep in Piles

A fun-fact about gnomes is their tendency to sleep in piles. In order to stay warm, communities will pile together and rotate who is on top throughout the night.

What's In A Name?

Gnomes love names. They LOVE names. It is not uncommon for a single gnome to take dozens or more nicknames. Many will take their given name from their parents and then take new names given to them from each of their cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, nephews, and friends. When meeting a stranger gnome and wishing to establish a relationship with them, a gnome will ask the other to name them and will remember that designation for the rest of their days.

A Giant Dispute

Due to their size and apparent tastiness, gnomes have become a savory treat for giant-kind. As such over the years, there has been an ever-waging war between gnome and giants. Gnomes have developed special fighting techniques to take out their foes and even specialized weapons like the Gnome-Hooked Hammer. This implement is able to climb a giant mid-combat to get to its weak spots, allowing the smallest of gnome troupes to take on the largest of giants with enough practice.

Tinkers & Illusions

Rock gnomes and Forest gnomes have learned to rely on their natural affinity to the earth in two separate ways. The Rock gnomes have learned to craft devices and objects out of the mountains they surround. This has led to the recent boom in technological advances in many places of Oryth such as the Tof'kra regions. Most notable, their development of firearms is said to be the most significant (and terrifying) invention to date.

Forest gnomes have adapted a more tribal sense of community, however, relying on the forces of nature and magic to aid them. As such, Forest gnomes have developed and natural affinity for casting illusionary spells. Even the most magically inept forest gnome can create a minor illusion.
