Chapter III: Echoes from the Grave

The Entropic Scourge

General Summary

The horrific sounds of endless chattering and wails of the unknown echoed through the chamber. Dead stacked upon the dead all eaten away by some unknown entity. There was a movement under the corpses that writhed and twisted before forming into a being with a choir of mouths that echoed a cacophonous wail from all their maws. This was no creature of Oryth, but an aberration from beyond.

Atlas, Lidori, and Flump find themselves heading to the Moristpor Graveyard where they see many people not mourning their loved ones but celebrating their lives. Some even having picnics and meals by their graves as a way of keeping their memories alive. They venture to the location where the people who were in a near-catatonic state exclaimed they were before seeing a beast of horror that put them in their stupor. Finding a guard and presenting him with information about their investigation, they make their way into the wealthy family's mausoleum.

Traveling down four levels of tombs void of dust and cobwebs due to the undertakers' efforts, they find their way to the end, noticing a small gap in the wall behind one of the sarcophagi. Squeezing their way in the entrance spills out into a tunnel that our adventurers being to trek. The tunnel eventually led to an opening with a pool of clear crystalline water glowing faintly from a source from within. Lidori submerging into the pool retrieved what was soon identified as a sunrod.

Looking up, the halfling noticed a backpack tangled and hanging from a stalactite. Pointing it out, the druid, Atlas shapeshifted into a sugar glider, allowing Lidori to throw her up to the ceiling of the cavern. Clamping onto a nearby stalactite, he scurried over to the backpack, crawling inside. Finding moldy bread, jerky, four additional sunrods, and a book, he mustered all of his might and after a few failed attempts were able to free it from the binds that held it. Lidori and Flump jumped for the backpack but only succeeded in getting themselves wet in the process, falling into the pool of water.

Lidori, recognizing the now-soggy book as written in Elvish, was able to pick out key words from her exposure to the romantic tongue. Though not fluent in the language by any means, she was able to determine that the owner of the backpack belonged to an expedition that had gone missing, lost their supplies, and were trapped after a tunnel collapsed on them. Without any further clues, she pocketed the book and continued on.
