Lucenys Beraeris
NPC
Lucenys was born to Malaevar and Jelaelys Beraeris at the end of 4815 AD on the island of Tyrosh. From the clutches of his mother and father, Lucenys’ size was not to be squandered and throughout his adolescence, the young boy sprouted quickly. The now head of his house, Lucenys stands tall and pronounced above his siblings and family. Known to carry a heavy spear, his voice carries a heavier weight, and the future of House Beraeris prevalent on his mind.
History
Early Life
Lucenys had no spectacular upbringing and most would suggest that he would eventually follow in his father’s footsteps. Already boasting a broad and tall frame at the age of 12, he took pride in being the protector of his two younger sisters. As soon as he could hold up a sword, his father took that from his clutches and replaced it with a spear.
“Balance it,” Malaevar would instruct the boy, staring him down as if he were a General and not his kin.
His father put him to task, training with the spearmen that served the family’s ranks. As he progressed, Lucenys benefited from the strict upbringing and became a formidable footsoldier, besting those who stood out in the ranks. Now what he grew in strength, limited him in other aspects of life. The young Beraeris did not have many friends outside of his family, and while he was known to be kind and affectionate to his younger siblings, he portrayed none of that to his comrades.
Young Adulthood
By 4831, Lucenys showed promise of everything his father thought he could be and more. However, this troubled the mind of his mother who would often backtrack when Malaevar departed the room.
“Have you ever considered the promise of marriage?”
It was no sooner that he would be promised to a woman, Selaenys Beraeris née Taelaenor, wed within a fortnight, and after some getting used to each other, the pair produced their first child - a girl. As he did with both of his sisters, the young man-turned-father would immediately see that she was cared for. But Lucenys’ thirst for a son would see him try and try over the next few years. To no avail, his wife was not only unable to produce an heir, but no child would come from their attempts. The strain this had on their relationship would see him turn to his father’s military once more, losing himself in the ranks as he progressed further.
When word reached Tyrosh of the battle that took place between Houses Valcoran and Calareon, both Lucenys and his father sat in with the war council as a potential fallout from the altercation. To their relief, nothing more came from the failed attempt, and business conducted as usual, though most who knew Malaevar would say that he was displeased with their liege house.
Ascension in Rank
The distance from his wife and family had left a void in Lucenys that was presumably replaced with rage and vigor expressed in battle. His first taste of blood occurred in a naval battle just off the coast of Tyrosh. A small fleet of bandits was seen fleeing the Stepstones. Being so close to home, his father sent out a small fleet of their own. Quickly and decisively, Lucenys and his men boarded the ship and pilfered the coffers after they made work of the men. His ability to lead the efforts and minimize casualties afforded him high praise from not only his father but the other leaders in the military.
The now Captain of the Beraeris army sat beside his father in meetings at the young age of ten and nine. What was learned from these council meetings was the wavering strength that the House Calareon had with the loss of both dragons, the strength they needed to muster to hold the western seafront and day-to-day tasks. What caught the attention of Lucenys was how involved they were in the Stepstones. The pirates and banditry that occurred would have him underestimating just how crucial their positioning was in Tyrosh.
The Brotherhood Arrives
News came from Malaevar’s brother that the mages came when word of his niece was exhibiting signs of magic-wielding. There was hardly a familiarity with his twin cousins, who for the better part of their young life would spend inseparable. However, prestige and the unknown piqued the interest of Lucenys as he tried his best to obtain a front-row seat to the test that would inevitably take his cousin Esmae to the Hall of Mages when she was five. Conversations ensued about how this would affect their family should she perform and join the Brotherhood’s ranks. To which his father and uncle both agreed; that it would change the outlook that the Beraeris family now held.
The Death of Malaevar
On a rare voyage into the sea in 4836, Lucenys’ father’s ship had capsized due to torrents far less navigable than they intended. With no recovery and a few stragglers returning to shore, the worst was assumed. The former captain of the military had now ascended to his father’s seat in Tyrosh. With little resolution, the man beheaded the survivors out of anger. There was no questioning just how much his father meant to Lucenys and it deeply affected him for years. When he wasn’t attending council meetings or subordinate dealings, he would be seen with his sisters. Not much time was given to his mother or wife, who probably was the only one who grieved more than him. Instead, he found comfort in the presence of his youngest sister, who for the majority of his life went to when he was down in a rut.
Recent History
Not much had occurred between his appointment to Head of House Beraeris and 4848 AD. His wife who hadn’t been able to produce a child, finally took to pregnancy and optimism ran rampant. The stoic nature of Lucenys broke and there was life to the man who had been absolved of emotion since the death of his father. Though six months had gone by and the unfortunate early labor would not only prove fatal for the infant, but it took the life of Lucenys’ wife in the process. The gods undoubtedly punished the Head of House Beraeris. Much wasn’t seen from the Lord of the house, save for the routine public appearances and if his sisters could ever get him outside.
There were incidents where his daughter would brighten the somber resolve of Lord Beraeris, but those were stretched far and thin. It was in 4849, that he would see to it that his daughter was wed to the son of House Malchorian, a wealthy merchant family that would ensure a profitable and strong alliance to House Beraeris’ already boasted military prowess. The alliance was met with an overwhelming amount of approval from both his Uncle and members of the council. However, some would say that it took a lot to remove his daughter from Lucenys’ unyielding grasp.
To the suggestion of his Uncle, Lucenys took in his younger cousin, Aeva as his steward to help manage the affairs of Tyrosh and his house, unburdening the man some. To his surprise, the young woman was keen on those matters that otherwise would’ve put some men to shame. When word reached that Esmae had also concluded her training and fulfilled her promise to the Brotherhood, conversations began to take place where she would end up providing her skills.
With the retinue of the Rhoynar approaching the Freehold, Lucenys, and his family saw this as an opportunity to gauge the state of Valyria. They would set out east, leaving Tyrosh in the good hands of his mother.
