The Battle of the Maeux Moons Military Conflict in The Delta Space | World Anvil

The Battle of the Maeux Moons

Summary

A large spaceship battle that occurred in the Ka'yar system near the Moons of Maeux, a former planet that collapsed eons ago leaving behind a triplet of large moons that spin in an odd figure-eight orbit caught in each other's gravitational fields. The battle was fought almost five years ago between the Ka'yar Colonial Governance and the Representative Democracy of Liberation and lasted a single week.    The conflict, saw a hundred thousand ships clashing in all-out warfare, fighters, cruisers, and battleships, all wreaking havoc upon each other for seemingly endless hours. By the end of the week-long battle, nearly a million lives were lost. Making it one of the bloodiest battles in Delta Space history, and easily the most violent engagement of the war between the two sides.   The battle was so intense, that it forced both sides to back down and introduce a fragile ceasefire due to the immense losses on both sides. To this day, nearly five years after the battle, the two sides sit in a cold war, refusing to engage in meaningful peace talks. And slowly but surely both sides have begun to rebuild their fleets and even the slightest provocation could spark full-on war once more.

The Participants

The Ka’yar Colonial Governance
This is the political body that has ruled over the Ka'yar system for countless generations. They have colonized dozens of planets in their system, putting in place branches of their their main political body on each planet to ensure that their governance is followed to the letter across their territory. The main political body, is located on the planet Tavaldi, a centrally located planet that grants the governance advantageous trade routes throughout their sector.   The governance has always been headed by one of the Ka'yar family lineage, though as time goes on they have become more and more a figurehead, with a council of military leaders and political advisors taking over the day to day. The Ka'yar Colonial Governance has mostly stuck to their traditional ways of leading the system in the direction they feel is best for the overall success of the governance. Though this often leads to decision that benefit those at the top, and leaves those at the bottom struggling for air.   The Ka'yar Colonial Governance is a divisive group, they bring stability to the sector with their experience and strong network with other systems. But they are heavy handed with their politics and think only of the big picture, while leaving many of their citizens without adequate support.

The Representative Democracy of Liberation
A young political entity in comparison to their older sibling, The Representative Democracy of Liberation (R.D.L) strives to hear the voice of their people, and has promised to act in accordance to their will. Originally the R.D.L and its citizens were apart of the of the Ka'yar Colonial Governance, but after years of being unheard and frustrated at what they perceived as rampant idignities towards the citizens of the system the group was formed. Several hundred former governance politicians and officers of the state, along with a dozen or so colonies, annexed themselves from the Ka'yar Colonial Governance to form the R.D.L.   They rechristened themselves as The Representative Democracy of Liberation to represent their new goals, setting up a completely different form of politics that they hoped would prove both more prosperous for their annexed territory and provide a better quality of life for their citizens.   However, the R.D.L is also a divisive group, while some see promise in their lofty goals, others see a naive political group that has overpromised and has over stretched its assets already in just a few short years. Many foresee an imminent collpase and recolonization from the Ka'yar Colonial Governance.

What Led to the Conflict?

The Ka’yar Colonial Governance and The Representative Democracy of Liberation used to be one large force, but two factions began to form within them. One wishing to continue following their traditional ways, and the other wishing to embrace modern methods. This eventually caused enough of a split, that they actually became two separate entities. But this came with a lot of complications as the R.D.L annexed a large portion of territory for themselves when they formed the group. The Ka'yr Colonial Governance could not let this stand, as the territory included several valuable assets. As such, they immediately sent out ships to recover the nearest planets.   The R.D.L intercepted the communications ordering this attack and sent their own ships to stop their efforts. This would lead to a small skirmish, one in which no lives were lost and would end in a matter of tense hours. But it wouldn't be the last skirmish, dozens would follow, most being small with no real ground being taken. This would go on for several months, the two groups jockeying back and forth, along with it developing a growing animosity for each other. Soon, they were not just fighting for territory they believed was rightly theirs, they were bitter enemies fighting over their individual ideologies. Each attempting to prove that the other was in the wrong, and was taking their citizens down a calamitous path.   Eventually, the fighting turned from small skirmishes to large-scale battles, and the boundaries of war would shift and move as the days and weeks went on. Eventually, the fighting arrived at the Mauex Moons, this is where each of the participants brought their full force to the front in an attempt to end the other.

What Ended the Conflict?

The end of the battle was for a simple reason, lack of operating ships and soldiers, extreme fatigue, and dwindling supplies. Over the course of the week-long battle, both sides would lose a hundred thousand ships, in the end nearly 60'000 fighter class ships, 30'000 cruisers, and ten thousand battleship class ships were destroyed or rendered almost completely inoperable. This amounted to almost the entirety of both side's fleets, leaving only enough ships to allow for retreat. The remaining ships operated by each side were mostly of trade or transport class and were only saved because they were not appropriate for battle.   In fact, to this day neither side has been able to recoup its losses. They have built up their fleets again somewhat, but not nearly to the same numbers, with each side only owning upwards of a thousand battle-ready ships on hand. And due to the immense cost, each side has only been able to rebuild a small handful of the larger battleship class ships, with each side only having a single-digit amount in operation at this time.

A Valuable Field of Debris

The carcasses of all the ships from the Battle of the Maeux Moons still listlessly float in space amongst the old battlefield, completely untouched. Floating in a huge manmade field of debris. It has sat untouched in space, unsalvaged, because of the ongoing hostility between the two sides. Neither is willing to negotiate with the other on what to do with the debris, or who gets what. And despite the debris field being worth a fortune in material and parts, no illegal scrapping has occurred, as the fear of sparking another bloodbath is still a real threat and not even the most brazen scrapper would dare take the risk.
