Hydraline Material in OmniVerse | World Anvil

Hydraline

Hydraline is a glass-like ore found at the bottom of the ocean floor. Exhibiting unusual properties when in contact with water, Hydraline has mainly seen use in modern-day boats and water-based transport; as well as other areas that would potentially require it's usage. When it is exposed to water, it acts as a repellant-- pushing all water around it away through unknown means. It's speculated that it does so via Mana that has been discovered within the ore; and that it is related to Edenite in some way.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Hydraline is sharp, jagged and rough to the touch, appearing deep underwater as sharp crystaline structures. Oftentimes, it will be visible thanks to the odd repulsion effect it exhibits on water, creating small bubbles that surround the shape of the crystals. When it's directly exposed to moonlight, it will begin to exhibit an otherworldly purple glow, matching that of the deep sea; with the light being dimmer or brighter depending on what cycle the moon is in.

Geology & Geography

Hydraline is found deep on the seafloor, gathered around in large clumps throughout the sea. Oftentimes, it will be covered in dried-up moss; dry as a bone as it lies somewhat buried in the sand and rock on the floor. It will often form when volcanic eruptions occur underwater; jutting up out of the ground near hydrothermal vents that have formed.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Oftentimes, Hydraline is used in the development of aquatic vehicles, such as lining the hull of a ship at key points to allow it to glide seamlessly across the water. This has proved useful for creating high-speed boats that soar quickly over the waters. Alongside that, certain models of cars will have the option during manufacturing to allow for protecting the car from becoming submerged into water; allowing for passengers to escape in the event of accidently driving into water.   Two other common uses for Hydraline is creating aqua-repellant tools and structures, which has proven especially useful for the construction of deep-ocean tunnels and bridges. Some entrepid explorers and tour guides will create staffs that have Hydraline embedded into the tip of it and feed it a surplus of mana, allowing travel along the ocean floor.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Oftentimes, those who live on the shore or at sea will benefit heavily from obtaining Hydraline to sell. Oftentimes, water communities such as the City Of Styx gain a large amount of money from selling Hydraline to the highest bidder. The two most likely groups of people who can get Hydraline are deep-diving explorers such as those from the Deepcore Foundation, or Nymphs who tend to travel deep underwater.

I love the idea of a water-repelling material being found on the ocean floor. I bet it looks really weird with that kind of thin bubble of air around it. I really like picturing boats skimming across the ocean's surface after being lined with this stuff.
