Merchants Rebellion Military Conflict in Kruos | World Anvil

Merchants Rebellion

The country of Omath has remained the most clannish in Kruos throughout history and skirmishes and raids between clans were somewhat common through the years. Few of these conflicts were of historical note and likely never even made it into recorded history, but one such conflict was so brutal and bloody that it has become known as the Merchants Rebellion.   Despite the extensive coastline of Omath, the vast majority of clans do no sea trade and stick to land routes instead. The Omathi Land Bridge, a narrow string of islands that rise from the sea at low tide to form a difficult but passable land route between Omath and Ziamid, is how the merchants of Omath are able to ship goods to and from Ziamid and lands beyond. By general agreement no clan had control of the road leading to the bridge or the bridge itself to prevent serious conflict.   It should come as no surprise that a clan chief would come along who thought he and his clan were more important than the rest and he chose to seize the lands adjacent to the bridge and institute a hefty tarriff for goods passing through "Clan Uthil's Soveriegn Territory." As Clan Uthil was large and militaristic it was a simple feat to take control and build a well-fortified set of gates through which merchants must pass. The other clans who travelled these passes were taken aback by this sudden change in centuries of established protocol and were in no position to fight against a well-planned hostile takeover of a critical chokepoint for their trade. For over a year they sent pleas to the king for aid, but as the current king was the chief of a southern clan with many ports he had no real interest in the bridge and wasn't willing to extend himself to aid. The lack of response emboldened Clan Uthil and they greedily settled into their new roles as toll takers. Finally, six smaller clans who relied heavily on the land bridge decided to work together to break the blockade.   The six clans, who referred to their alliance as the Merchant Rebels, plotted for months on how to rid Clan Uthil from the bridge. Inspiration struck when they realized that Uthil had put the vast majority of their fortifications against an attack from the west as the Ziamidian merchants could simply ship their goods over the seas and avoid the blockade entirely. Eventually the rebels settled on a plan of subterfuge and sent the forces of two of the clans across the sea to the Vegrehed Isthmus of Ziamid and dressed some of the clan warriors from another clan as merchants and hid others in wagons as "cargo." They coordinated based on the moon cycle and the clans that came from the east arrived shortly after the "merchants" arrived at the gate where they would have their cargo inspected and pay the tariffs. What followed was a brief skirmish that saw the guards at the gate massacred and the fortifications taken by the 'Rebels'. The Uthils wasted no time in attacking the rebels but had done their job too well and the fortifications that they built were easily held against them. It was at that point that the remaining clans that made up the Merchant Rebels attacked from the west, grinding the Uthils between their forces and the fortifications. It was a bloody week for Clan Uthil as their forces were nearly exterminated as they were squeezed between their enemies.   When the remaining members of Clan Uthil finally were allowed to surrender, they slunk back to their original lands and eventually were lost to history. The Merchant Rebel clans tore down the fortifications and signed the Land Bridge Accords to officially state that no clan would ever attempt to seize control of the bridge again. Over the next decade the accords were signed by all of the other major clans of Omath and the bridge has remained freely passable for any and all who wish to cross.
