Blackhound Rainforest

The Blackhound Rainforest is a large temperate rainforest in the northeast of Menerv. I was called Greypeak Rainforest, until sightings of a large black wolf-like creature became a prominent local legend and the name was changed.

Features

The rainforest stretches' up the Greypeak section of the Great Wyvern mountain range the terrain is broken and full of ravines, caves, and rivers. It is noted as a area where entrances to the fey wild are more frequent and a large amount of tales involving deals or other encounters with Fey are common. The forests most recognizable landmark is Layman's falls, a large waterfall that is punctuated by a massive spire of dark grey stone splitting the Whitecap River into the Great Tail River, that veers father down the mountain range into Nja'kvas, and the Undergrowth River that cuts through the Blackhound Rainforest before running underground.

Flora and Fauna

The Rainforest is primarily Cyprus and Cedar trees with a smattering of River birch and oak. The floor is perpetually cover in moss and lichens giving off an otherworldly air and to get anywhere you will have to bushwhack your way through massive ferns, brambles, and shrubs. The damp environment also encourages fungi and molds of many kinds.
Birds love the area with all its nooks and hidey-holes in the foliage, squirrels, chipmunks, and other rodents are also common including Giant Flying Squirrels and False Rabbits. Foxes, opossums, racoons, and weasels are common mid food chain predators. Several kinds of deer browse the low branches that are in turn stalked by wolves and wildcats.
Elves and the Pumard are know to live inside the forest but most of the other Mortal Races remain on the outskirts due to the hash terrain and humidity.

Lore and Legend

The oldest legends from the Blackhound Rainforest are mostly generic tales about Fey and being lured into the fey wilds, the usual childhood warnings of wandering off. Other common stories are about strange and fantastical locations hidden deep in the rainforest, groves where the air is so thick you can swim in it and fox cities in the roots of giant trees. Most recently a legend has sprung up about a large wolf like beast with copper antlers, raven wings, and fangs like a snake harrying hunters off from some places in the forest.
