Mergewater Smuggler's Tunnels

Under the capital city of Lyrinthia, Mergewater lies a vast network of tunnels and inter-connected basements that are used by the smuggler groups known as the Tunnel Rats.

Purpose / Function

The tunnel rats use these tunnels to get around the city without the prying eye of the Lyrinthian Crownsguard. The crownsguard probably are aware of the tunnels, but the system is so vast and labyrinthine that if they were ever raided, it would be very hard to navigate for those unfamiliar to the tunnel system.   The Tunnel Rats have many different bases of operation under various buildings in the city. These are normally located near street entrances to the tunnels for ease of access. To throw off the crownsguard, meetings are never held in the same base twice in a row, making the gang very hard to pin down.

Denizens

In the tunnels you would come in contact with the Tunnel Rats, but also some of Mergewater's homelss population who take rffuge under the city streets.

Contents & Furnishings

Contents are usually kept to a minimum and are usually able to be moved quickly in case of any potential raids. However some "offices" are more permanently and ornately decorated and used for more formal meetings involving the Tunnel rats.

Valuables

The Tunnel Rats have a lot of illicit goods under the city streets and even some stolen goods while they are used to transport things under the city, away from the prying eyes of the crownsguard.

Hazards & Traps

There are many make-shifts traps, dead ends and pitfalls for those unfamiliar with the tunnels.

Alterations

The tunnels are made by hand digging, and breaking through between unused basements of the city's residences and businesses.

Architecture

Varies depending on what part of the tunnels you are in. Parts are literally basements of buildings, some resemble carved tunnels and others resemble mines.

History

The tunnels were originally built at the old docks of Mergewater to store perishable goods in a cooler environment, When the docks became mostly disused with the creation of the new southern docks, these tunnels and rooms were used by smugglers which then expanded the tunnels to near by basements, and banded together, forming the Tunnel Rats
