MOON-XV Settlement in Desolation | World Anvil

MOON-XV

MOON-XV is an orbital station that was formerly an artificial third moon of the planet of Desolation. It is home to approximately 30% of the population, home to many of both the stationaires and enginefolk, each living in different parts of the station. The Moon was created long before the disaster of Desolation, and is widely considered to be the cause of that calamity.

Government

The Moon, like the rest of Desolation, is ruled by the mysterious Council of Stars. It is the closest area within reach of the Council, and so is a bit more subject to its law. Spacekeepers are fairly common on the station, with them making up a ratio of 1 Spacekeeper to every 10 civilians.

Laws & Life

The people on the station have grown used to a near constant state of surveilance across the station, and most will report any crimes they come across to the Spacekeepers out of fear of being persecuted as an accomplice. Propaganda from the Council is heaviest here, and the people living on the Moon are more suggestible to the Council's rule and more likely to be supportive of them.

Design & Construction

The station maintains orbit around the gravity of the broken planet of Desolation, maintaining forward momentum through thrusters and stabilisers across the outside of the station. These are powered by the station's engines, held within the centre of the moon. Those living near the engine, with no view of the sky or stars from deep within the station, are known as enginefolk. Those able to live nearer to the observation decks, or with glass roofs to see the stars from the comfort of their home, are known as stationaires.
Protruding from the station at certain points are numerous lifedomes, containing plants that provide the primary source of food for the rest of the station. These domes are kept and maintained by lifebringers, trusted to ensure the growth and health of the plants living there. Some such areas contain gardens for stationaires to enjoy themselves in, and the domes can vary in size from personal gardens to entire fields. The richest of the stationaires keep miniature gardens as part of their own estates, employing personal lifebringers to upkeep them.
The station has multiple different docking points that allow for ships to connect to the station, allowing for the transfer of goods, resources, and people across ships and stations. These docking ports are locked across the outside of the station, with higher-priority ones located nearer to the richer districts, while lower-priority ones are available in the lower areas of the station with tunnels leading directly to the inner corridors surrounding the engines.

Notable Locations

Within the Moon, there are many different locations of note. The Engine, simply known as that, is the largest engine of any of the stations. It is contained within a locked and heavily guarded room, surrounded by the Enginehalls that are home to those known as enginefolk. The Upper Observatory is located at the very top of the station, an elevated platform with a glass dome. Located around the widest part of the base is the Moonring, extending slightly outwards from the exterior of the Moon and the hub of transportation on the station. On the lower decks of the station are the waste decks, facilitating waste disposal or recycling for the station.

Establishments

There are a few notable establishments located in the Moon. One of the most popular bars and restaurants in the area is the Rising Sky, protruding outwards from the station in a large platform encased in a glass dome. Popular on the Enginehalls is the Bowels of the Moon, a suspected hub for rebel activity - though nothing has been caught as of yet. The Moontower is a large tower-like building crossing almost every floor in the Moon, and is used as office space for a number of different companies and corporations. One other well-known structure within the Moon is the Alcove, a hollow region across five different floors.
