Vantas Company

wow that's a lot of stars is a sci-fi setting about adventure, exploration, and discovery. Every person, place, and thing has a story to tell, if you listen closely.   Setting Intro | Visitor's Guide | Author's Intentions
Vantas Company was founded by Vantas Vohn with his vast generational wealth. It's largely a venture capital firm, which invests vast sums of money in businesses in exchange for certain rights to the products or cuts of the profit.

G-R-W-T-H

The company's most well-known investment is that of Idorea Nassus' fashion line: G-R-W-T-H. The clothing incorporated Devalian flowers into the fabric, creating living attire. Idorea, however, lacked the skill and equipment to make her designs reality. Their poor quality and awkward shapes added to concerns about about having Devalian soil come in close contact with bare skin, and she barely made enough to get by.
Vantas Vohn himself spotted her meagre offerings in Abraia Central's Sunday market. Seeing the potential, he chose to invest. Quality went up with better fabric and skilled employees. The company hosted fashion shows with a variety of models to showcase how safe it was. With advertising promoting the fashion as a demonstration of true Devalian pride, the designer brand quickly became a must-have for Abraian socialites.

Mirasoil

The company went on to fund research into Devalian soil, eventually patenting the chemical composition that makes it unique and trademarking the name Mirasoil. The goal was to market the product to the upper classes of other planets, whether to improve their gardens or their produce yield to later sell. Risks of disease, uncontrolled growth, and harm to local ecosystems were downplayed in favor of the potential personal benefits.
The first major trade deal for Mirasoil was with the mercenary group from Talmar, the Unchained Armada. The group wanted to use the soil to prove to locals on the low-tech planet that joining the larger galactic community was to their benefit. Yet Loren Tebils, the head scientist in charge of the research, protested the deal and stole the data so it couldn't go through. The matter was resolved without police action by having Loren join the Armada to oversee their use of the product.   Many in Abraia called out the company's hubris, or believed Devali's uniqueness should remain on Devali, as if selling this soil would diminish the value of the planet itself. When Idorea Nassus began exhibiting symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease associated with too much direct contact with Devali's soil, trust in the company plummeted. It got worse when Idorea passed away the following year.

Today

Idorea's death deeply affected Vantas Vohn. Over the next several years, the company pivoted. Its Mirasoil deals became more about safe use of the product in controlled environments than selling a commodity. They began investing in startups focused on treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. The company is now half the size with half the net worth as before, but has gained more respect for their actions.
