Nuglub Species in The World of Cartyrion | World Anvil

Nuglub

Nuglubs are a Gremlin subspecies. They are one of two corrupted form of Brownies created by Corizzea of the Alevar - the other being the Grimple. They are one of the more common types of gremlin encountered in the forested regions of Cartyrion, though they will rarely be encountered in groups.

Nuglubs are small, hunchbacked creatures with ancient-looking, gnarled features that make them resemble miniature versions of Tree Hags. Their long, pointed ears help to differentiate them. A feature they retain from their origins as Brownies is the fact that, despite their awkward appearance and walking gait, they are deceptively agile - especially in combat. Though they have lost the Brownie's innate ability to teleport short distances, they do have several innate magical capabilities that make them dangerous as well.

Nuglubs love to set traps to ambush unsuspecting folk traversing their forest territories. Crude snares or other traps fashioned out of the forest fauna allow them to attack while the victim is distracted and unaware of their approach - and their sneak attacks can be deadly. When attacking creatures larger than themselves (such as most of the Folk), they use tactics designed to "bring their opponents down to size" - tripping tactics to keep targets off balance.
Name
Nuglub
Type
Fey, Gremlin
Size
Small - approx 2.5ft (75cm) tall
Habitat
Common: forest
Uncommon: urban (village)

It is not uncommon to encounter a Nuglub that has coerced one or more Mitflits, and occasionally a Jinkin or two to act as lackeys. They have a strong desire to dominate creatures around them. This is the main reason it is rare to encounter even two together - they tend to fall into bickering over who is "in charge" rather quickly.
