Oxail

The Oxail is a massive beast of burden, common to the northern part of Frampia, primarily Wesbury. At a distance it resembles a large snail, with no limbs and barely much difference between the front and the back. The creatures are roughly somewhere between two and three times the size of an Ox. When in movement, four eyestalks protrude from the front end of the Oxail, with large bulbous eyes peering around. The Oxail is practically all muscle and moves by pulling and extending it's entire body. Unlike snails, it is not moist to the touch, but instead dry and leathery, somewhat like a snake with no scales. Like snakes, it changes it's outer husk once a year, going into hibernation for a week while it regrows the protective surface.   Oxail feed of any material they can find lying on the ground, absorbing it directly through their skin. This process means that they leave an incredibly clean trail behind them, with rocks and dirt looking as if it has been recently washed once the Oxail has passed over it. The Oxail is primarily a herbivore, feeding off grass, leaves, bushes, small trees and the fallen branches of larger trees. But if the Oxail happens to pass over a dead, or dying, animal the creature will absorb this just as well. Children of Wesbury are taught stern lessons about not getting in the path of the lumbering creatures at an early age.   The Oxail har very useful as beasts of burden, capable of carrying large loads on their bodies, as well as hauling carts behind them. They are completely useless for farming since they strips the soil of all nourishment while pulling a plow, but for journeys they are very useful. Oxail do not move fast, but they do make up for this with a very steady pace, and the opportunity to feed them while travelling by simply strewing fodder on the ground in front is a great advantage.   While not a common practice, it is not unheard of too eat Oxail. The meat is somewhat sour and very chewy though, so it is rarely used outside of stew for the very poor.

I'm a sucker for taking unusual critters and exploring how they might fit into the world as a domesticated animal, so these guys are right up my alley. I'm a big fan of this article, and I like how you've even explored what they taste like if eaten :D   Do they see any military use, as far as being beasts of burden? Or are they just too slow? Or do you ever taunt the enemy army by letting your oxail's vacuum up all their dead and dying?   Awesome stuff :D

These are both excellent questions, and should possibly be explored more, if I had a clearer focus for what the themes of the world are. For now it is simply a writing exercise, a reason to interact with the prompts.   As for answers: I imagine they are too slow for active military use, but are very useful for hauling supplies. And yes, I imagine the eat the dead (and dying) after battle, though I think it is more practical tradition than meant to be a taunt.   Would make sense for the dominant religion in the area to focus on the cycle of life and how natural it is for the dead to decompose/be used for food. It could even involve funeral rites about the dead being absorbed by Oxail.
